About this role
ELECTRICAL APPLICATIONS ENGINEER-POWER GENERATION
Who We Are
Central Power Systems & Services is a privately held company with deep roots dating back to 1954. We are a growing organization serving the Critical Power market through the design, manufacturing, integration, installation, and support of power generation systems.
Our mission is forging long-lasting partnerships by providing first-class customer support. We accomplish this by combining industry expertise, innovative technology, quality products, and exceptional people to deliver reliable power solutions for our customers.
As we continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer who wants to do more than produce designs and hand them off.
This is an opportunity to own electrical solutions from application and design through manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and field support.
For the right engineer, this position offers the opportunity to relocate to the Kansas City area and become a key technical contributor within a growing power generation organization. We are prepared to offer a competitive compensation package, including relocation assistance, for an exceptional candidate whose experience aligns with our needs.
If you are an electrical engineer with experience in power generation, electrical power systems, data centers, industrial power, or complex electrical design , this may be an opportunity to take your career in a new direction.
The Opportunity
The Applications Electrical Engineer will play a key role in the electrical design and application of generator systems and associated power equipment.
This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving real-world electrical challenges and wants to see their designs move from engineering drawings to built, tested, energized equipment.
You will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Production, Quality, Service, Sales, and Operations to develop solutions that are technically sound, manufacturable, reliable, and aligned with customer requirements.
Unlike a traditional consulting engineering role, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the equipment and the people building it—troubleshooting problems on the manufacturing floor, participating in testing and validation, influencing product design, and seeing projects through implementation.
What You'll Do
Electrical & Power Systems Design
- Design and develop electrical systems for diesel and natural gas generator sets, generator controls, switchgear, distribution systems, and related power generation equipment.
- Develop electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, control drawings, panel layouts, and electrical documentation.
- Design and review electrical power distribution systems associated with generator applications.
- Perform electrical load calculations, voltage drop calculations, fault-current analysis, and other engineering calculations as required.
- Evaluate generator, switchgear, distribution, controls, protection, and auxiliary electrical systems to ensure proper application and integration.
- Select and specify electrical components, controls, protection devices, instrumentation, and other system components.
- Review customer requirements, project specifications, electrical drawings, and technical documentation to develop appropriate engineering solutions.
- Support the application of generator systems to commercial, industrial, data center, healthcare, utility, and other critical-power applications.
Applications Engineering
- Translate customer requirements and project specifications into practical electrical solutions.
- Review project requirements and identify potential design, application, and technical issues before they impact manufacturing or installation.
- Work with Sales and Project Management to provide technical expertise during the quoting and application process.
- Develop equipment configurations and electrical designs that balance customer requirements, performance, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
- Review electrical designs for compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Support technical discussions with customers, vendors, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Provide engineering support throughout the life of a project—from initial application through production, testing, delivery, and field installation.
Manufacturing & Product Support
- Work directly with Production and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure electrical designs can be efficiently and safely manufactured.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting on the manufacturing floor.
- Investigate electrical issues identified during assembly, testing, startup, or field operation.
- Lead or participate in root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities.
- Analyze test results and equipment performance to identify opportunities to improve reliability and quality.
- Support prototype builds, product launches, engineering changes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain electrical testing procedures, inspection criteria, and validation methods.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, specifications, bills of material, and revision-controlled documents.
- Support the development of operator instructions and technical training materials.
Testing, Commissioning & Field Support
- Participate in generator and electrical system testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Provide technical support for commissioning and startup activities as needed.
- Assist Service and Field Engineering teams in diagnosing complex electrical and controls issues.
- Occasionally travel to customer locations, project sites, vendors, or suppliers to support technical requirements.
- Apply lessons learned from field performance to improve future designs and products.
Codes, Standards & Engineering Excellence
- Ensure electrical designs comply with applicable NEC, NFPA, UL, CSA, IEEE , and other industry standards and requirements.
- Stay current with developments in electrical power systems, generator technology, controls, protection, and applicable industry standards.
- Research and evaluate new technologies, components, and engineering methods.
- Participate in Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, cost reduction, and product reliability initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve electrical designs, standardize solutions, reduce engineering complexity, and improve manufacturability.
What Makes You Successful
We are looking for an engineer who combines strong technical capability with practical problem-solving skills.
You will be successful in this role if you:
- Enjoy solving complex electrical and power-system problems.
- Can take a project from a customer requirement or specification through an engineered solution.
- Are comfortable working with both engineering drawings and physical equipment.
- Like being close to the manufacturing and testing process rather than working exclusively behind a desk.
- Can communicate complex technical information to engineers, technicians, production employees, customers, and leadership.
- Are comfortable making decisions and taking ownership of engineering solutions.
- Have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Can manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
- Are collaborative, adaptable, and willing to get involved when a problem needs to be solved.
- Want an opportunity to have a visible impact on a growing organization.
