Job Title: Bioprocess Technician Job Description
The Bioprocess Technician performs a wide range of duties to support biological production processes, focusing on aseptic operations, in-process quality checks, and strict adherence to current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) and safety standards. This role works primarily on the production floor with large-scale fermentation and related equipment, ensuring that all production activities follow batch production records, standard operating procedures, and site policies while contributing to continuous improvement of workplace processes.
Responsibilities
- Perform aseptic processes including weighing, measuring, counting, calculations, sampling, and verifications required for biological production in accordance with batch production records (BPR).
- Follow current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) standards, all applicable safety standards, and site procedures during all production activities.
- Apply basic knowledge of fermentation, centrifugation, concentration units, and biological organisms in day-to-day production tasks.
- Understand and operate production equipment, ensuring that all equipment, instruments, and production materials are properly released and available for use before starting operations.
- Look up information and perform transactions within the electronic inventory management system to support material and equipment tracking.
- Oversee production processes, including cleaning activities, environmental monitoring, and personnel practices, in alignment with written procedures.
- Perform in-process batch quality checks according to established procedures to ensure product quality and compliance.
- Follow safety rules consistently, wear appropriate safety equipment, and maintain proper safety practices at all times on the production floor.
- Use basic computer skills to create and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), write deviation reports, and complete assigned training.
- Complete all required training related to general procedures, area-specific procedures, equipment operation, computer operation, safety, and GMP requirements.
- Read and interpret batch records, quality documentation, and safety documentation accurately to execute tasks correctly and maintain compliance.
- Generate or collect new ideas to improve workplace efficiency, safety, and production processes.
- Support sterile and bioprocessing activities, including fermentation and bioprocess manufacturing, in accordance with SOPs and quality standards.
- Contribute to documentation and record-keeping to ensure accurate tracking of production activities and adherence to quality requirements.
Essential Skills
- Ability to perform aseptic techniques and sterile processing in a production environment.
- Basic knowledge of fermentation processes and bioprocessing operations.
- Understanding of biological organisms relevant to production activities.
- Familiarity with centrifuges, fermentation systems, vessels, and other large-scale production systems.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow batch production records, quality documents, and safety documentation.
- Knowledge of and adherence to current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) standards.
- Ability to follow and apply standard operating procedures (SOPs) in daily work.
- Basic computer skills for updating SOPs, writing deviation reports, and completing electronic training.
- Capability to perform calculations, measurements, and verifications accurately for production batches.
- Strong attention to safety, including consistent use of appropriate safety equipment and practices.
- Ability to oversee in-process batch quality checks and maintain high quality standards.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Bachelors degree in Biotechnology or a related scientific field is preferred.
- Previous experience in a manufacturing or production setting is preferred.
- Experience working with fermentation systems, centrifuges, and concentration units is beneficial.
- Ability to multitask and manage several activities simultaneously on the production floor.
- Capability to think on ones feet and maintain a bigger-picture mindset when overseeing batches and equipment.
- Interest in generating and contributing ideas for process and workplace improvements.
- Comfort working with instrumentation and performing mechanical tasks on production equipment.
- Strong documentation skills to support quality, safety, and GMP compliance.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily on the production floor rather than in a laboratory, with only minimal time spent in lab areas. The position works on first shift, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Bioprocess Technician oversees production batches and their quality while working with fermentation systems, vessels, centrifuges, concentration units, and other large-scale production systems. The environment involves frequent interaction with instrumentation and mechanical equipment, requiring attention to safety rules and consistent use of appropriate safety gear. Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Dodge, IA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $33.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
