We're looking for a Senior Magento Engineer to own and optimize critical checkout functionality, including payments, promotions, gift vouchers and order fulfilment integrations. You'll focus on building a fast, reliable and scalable checkout experience, particularly during peak trading periods like Christmas. We're looking for someone with strong hands-on Magento 2 production experience who understands performance optimization, scalability and high-traffic eCommerce environments.
Why this role
Join a team focused on modern technology, engineering quality and continuous improvement.
- Modern Tech Stack: Up-to-date Magento Open Source, PHP and well-documented architecture.
- Code Quality: Static analysis, mutation testing and automated unit and end-to-end tests.
- Fast Deployment: Automated CI/CD pipelines with multiple releases each week.
- Scalable Infrastructure: Kubernetes with logging, monitoring and performance tracing.
- AI-Driven Development: Integrated AI coding tools to support daily development, testing and code reviews.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain custom Magento 2 modules for checkout, payments, promotions and vouchers, with tests.
- Integrate Magento with payment providers and internal services over REST APIs and message queues.
- Find and fix performance problems in caching, indexing, queues and checkout, and help run load tests before peak.
- Investigate production issues with logs, metrics and traces, and fix them.
- Review code, contribute to technical design and architecture decisions, and improve the CI/CD pipeline when it gets in the team's way.
- Use AI tools to write, refactor, review and test code, and check their output before it ships.
What you'll bring
- Five or more years building and running Magento 2 in production. Experience on Open Source or Adobe Commerce both count .
- Solid knowledge of Magento internals: dependency injection, plugins, observers, service contracts, the module system and message queues. Modern PHP (8.x), good object-oriented design, and the habit of writing PHPUnit tests.
- Performance work on a busy store: full-page cache, Redis, indexing and MySQL query tuning.
- An understanding of observability (logging, metrics and tracing) on a high-traffic store. Enough frontend to work in Magento themes: Knockout.js, RequireJS and Tailwind CSS.
Daily use of Docker, Git and CI/CD. Kubernetes experience helps, and we'll get you up to speed if you're newer to it.
- Day-to-day use of agentic development tools, such as Claude Code or similar, in your engineering work.
- Using AI across the whole development cycle: scaffolding, code generation, refactoring, writing tests, code review, debugging and documentation. The judgement to check, test and take ownership of AI-generated code rather than accepting it as it is.
- Good prompting and context management on a real codebase. Experience with MCP-based integrations is a plus.
- A cool head under pressure, and the ability to explain trade-offs to engineers, product and QA.
Nice to have
- Payment gateway integrations at scale.
- Getting a store ready for a seasonal peak: load testing, capacity planning, change freezes.
- Headless or composable commerce.
- Static analysis and mutation testing.
