Job Description:
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Technology Marketing Student Intern for the Division of Research and Innovation - Advantage at Oregon State University (OSU).
The positions are classified by OSU as Student Technical Assistant positions (maximum of 20 hours per week; hours are not guaranteed and may fluctuate over the course of the appointment). The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in technology commercialization, with a primary focus on developing, maintaining, and improving marketing materials for Oregon State University technologies available for licensing.
The intern will work with licensing managers and OSU inventors to translate technical innovations into accurate, accessible, non-confidential marketing materials; maintain current technology listings; support outreach to prospective licensees; and help evaluate the OSU technology portfolio for marketing needs. All duties will be carried out under the supervision of a licensing manager.
Work hours will vary based on student availability, academic term, and program needs, consistent with OSU student employment requirements. Work will be coordinated by OSU Advantage licensing managers and will include independent research and writing, portfolio review, and communication with researchers and other stakeholders. Students will be expected to communicate regularly with their supervising licensing manager and maintain accurate records of assigned projects and completed marketing activities. Because the position may involve access to confidential information and technologies prior to patent filing or public disclosure, students will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement as a condition of employment.
This position is open to Oregon State University students in any major or field of study. Students majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics), business, marketing, or related fields are especially encouraged to apply.
Position Duties:
60% Technology Marketing:
- Draft, edit, and maintain non-confidential technology marketing materials for OSU inventions, including concise descriptions of the technology, applications, advantages, development status, and commercial opportunities.
- Work directly with OSU inventors and licensing managers to understand technologies and confirm the technical accuracy, clarity, and appropriate level of disclosure in marketing materials.
- Keep existing technology marketing materials current by incorporating relevant new developments, including publications, patent filings and issued patents, research advances, validation data, and other approved updates.
- Review and help maintain technology listings on OSU Advantage marketing channels, including the OSU Advantage website and InPart, for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and continued relevance.
- Communicate marketing activity and progress to inventors, including when technology listings are created or updated, where technologies are being promoted, and relevant responses or expressions of interest when directed by the licensing manager.
- Conduct targeted market and industry research to identify potential applications, relevant market segments, competing or alternative approaches, and companies that may be prospective licensees or commercialization partners.
- Identify prospective licensees and support targeted outreach campaigns, including preparation of company lists, contact research, and tailored non-confidential outreach materials.
- Participate in meetings, calls, and communications with OSU researchers, licensing managers, startup companies, and prospective licensees as appropriate.
30% Invention Review and Triage:
- Review invention disclosures, facilitate their submission by working with OSU inventors to gather and clarify relevant technical information, and conduct prior art searches related to disclosed technologies.
10% Other Duties as Assigned
