Job Summary:
The Department of History invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
Appointment at the Instructor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach lower-division history survey courses, and upper-division and/or graduate courses in Military History, including U.S. Military History, European Military History, American Diplomatic History, and related areas.
- Develop new courses in related fields.
- Participate in recruiting and mentoring students, including especially students in the military history minor.
- Participate in departmental and college governance and professional activities; serve on university committees, as time, interest and aptitude permit.
This Instructor role in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion is a full-time non-tenure track position. The person in this role is intended to have primary expertise in military history or war studies with a preferred emphasis on the United States.
The Instructor will teach ten courses each academic year (typically 3-3-4). Oregon State University (OSU) is on the quarter system, with classes of 10 weeks of instruction. The Instructor will be expected to teach a combination of existing upper-level history courses, which may include: American military history before and after 1865, American diplomatic history, the United States and Vietnam, European military history, the experience of war, and the Historian’s Craft (a general methodology course). Duties may also involve teaching lower-division history surveys related to the Instructor’s areas of expertise. The Instructor will have the opportunity to teach graduate students enrolled in upper-division courses and to design new courses that speak to their interests. The teaching load will include a combination of synchronous in-person courses on the Corvallis campus and asynchronous courses on OSU’s vibrant and highly ranked Ecampus. Required Qualifications:
- PhD in History or closely related field (by time of position start.)
- Demonstrated ability to teach courses at the college/university level in military history, war studies, or closely related fields.
- Record of teaching practices that align with OSU Quality Teaching Framework.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in military history, war studies, or related field.
- Experience developing and teaching asynchronous distance education courses.
- Experience with outreach and engagement, such as participating in events connecting history to contemporary issues.
