Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Veterinary Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU) invites applications for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty position in Anatomic Pathology at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level. Appointment rank and track will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, documented experience, and interests. The successful candidate will join 6 ACVP Anatomic Pathologists, 3 ACVP Clinical Pathologists, 2 ACVM Veterinary Parasitologists and 1 specialist in medical education assessment.
This position has a primary commitment to teaching and professional practice. This position is devoted primarily to teaching and professional practice, with a limited portion of effort allocated to research and scholarly activities. The specific distribution of responsibilities will be established with the department chair based on departmental needs, appointment track, and the successful candidate’s qualifications and interests.
The successful candidate will participate in the department’s surgical biopsy and necropsy services. The biopsy service receives submissions from the ISU Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) and practicing veterinarians in the surrounding region. The necropsy service evaluates diverse species submitted through the LVMC small and large animal clinics. Responsibilities include diagnostic interpretation and communication of findings to clinicians and referring veterinarians, with an emphasis on accurate, timely, and clinically useful reports.
Teaching responsibilities include instruction of senior veterinary students and pathology residents through diagnostic service, including necropsy techniques, lesion recognition and interpretation, and clinicopathologic correlation. The successful candidate will also contribute to didactic and laboratory instruction in anatomic pathology and related disciplines for undergraduate, professional (DVM), and graduate students, as assigned, and participate in resident training and mentorship.
The successful candidate will advance anatomic pathology through scholarship appropriate to the appointment track and assigned effort. Clinical-track scholarship may include case reports, case series, educational scholarship, and collaborative research. Tenure-track faculty are expected to contribute anatomic pathology expertise to research collaborations resulting in peer-reviewed publications. Scholarly expectations will be consistent with the position’s substantial teaching and professional practice commitment.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent degree.
- Board certification in anatomic pathology through the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP), or Japanese College of Veterinary Pathologists (JCVP).
In addition to the requirements above, the following minimum qualifications apply by rank and track:
Clinical Associate Professor. A graduate degree; Diplomate status in anatomic pathology in the ACVP, ECVP, or JCVP; and a minimum of five years of professional practice experience emphasizing companion animal, production animal, and equine pathology.
Clinical Professor . A graduate degree; and a minimum of ten years of professional practice experience emphasizing companion animal, production animal and equine pathology.
Assistant Professor on the tenure track. A PhD.
Associate Professor on the tenure track. A PhD; a minimum of five years of professional practice experience emphasizing companion animal, production animal, and equine pathology; a record of scholarship and teaching; and experience with resident training.
Professor . A PhD; and a minimum of ten years of professional practice experience emphasizing companion animal, production animal and equine pathology; a record of scholarship and teaching; and experience with resident training.
Candidates for appointment at the Associate Professor and Professor level must demonstrate accomplishments in scholarship, teaching, and clinical service appropriate to the rank and appointment track.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in diagnostic anatomic pathology, including biopsy and necropsy services involving companion animals, production animals, and horses.
- Experience teaching anatomic pathology in didactic, laboratory, or clinical settings.
- Research experience demonstrated through publications, grants, or graduate student mentorship.
- An MS, PhD, or equivalent graduate degree in veterinary pathology, microbiology, virology, education, or a related veterinary field, where not already required for the appointment rank.
Department/Program & College Description:
The Department of Veterinary Pathology contributes to the teaching, professional practice, and research missions of the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. Its diagnostic services support patient care through the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and provide opportunities for instruction of veterinary students and pathology residents. Departmental research areas include animal models of human disease, infectious diseases, carcinogenesis, toxicology, host-pathogen interactions, parasitology, educational scholarship, and comparative pathology.
The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals from Iowa and surrounding states. Clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and veterinary students work collaboratively in patient care and clinical education.
