Job Title: Quality Lab Technician Job Description
The Quality Lab Technician inspects and verifies that products are manufactured in accordance with customer specifications and internal quality standards. This role performs validation and verification of monitoring activities, product sampling, inspection, analysis, and internal audits at all stages of production in line with applicable regulations. The position offers exposure to multiple regulatory frameworks and industries through work with industrial chemicals used in fertilizer and food-grade applications. Shifts available include second shift (MondayFriday, 3:00 p.m.11:30 p.m.), third shift (MondayFriday, 11:00 p.m.7:30 a.m.), and first shift (MondayFriday, 6:00 a.m.2:00 p.m., with training between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.).
Responsibilities
- Inspect and provide disposition for the receipt, inspection, and release of raw materials, in-process product, finished product, packaging materials, and processing aids.
- Issue, review, and file batch records, labels, facility documentation, and seals for manufacturing and packaging activities.
- Create and issue Certificates of Analysis for all shipments and prepare other customer-specific documentation or label requirements as needed.
- Review Certificates of Analysis provided with raw materials or containers and verify compliance against internal specifications.
- Conduct product sampling, inspection, and analysis at all stages of production in accordance with governing regulations and internal procedures.
- Perform and/or facilitate third-party product testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and final product.
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Apply all product quality and safety standards consistently and promptly report any product safety incidents to the appropriate leadership or designated back-up.
- Participate in internal audits and contribute to validation and verification of monitoring activities across the production process.
- Review department systems and recommend improvements to processes and procedures to enhance quality and efficiency.
- Accurately document test results, observations, and quality decisions in laboratory records and batch documentation.
- Collaborate with production and quality team members on the floor to resolve quality issues and provide technical support.
- Use communication tools such as walkie-talkies to coordinate with production personnel and support real-time quality decisions.
- Support weekend coverage during busy fertilizer season as needed, working within the established shift rotation.
- Perform other related quality and laboratory duties as assigned to support overall quality assurance objectives.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience.
- Experience working in a regulated manufacturing environment is preferred, including exposure to standards such as SQF, FAMI-QS, IPEC or similar frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory testing methodologies and the ability to analyze and interpret test results.
- Proficiency in wet chemistry techniques, including titration, pH measurement, and pipetting.
- Experience with instrumental analytical methods such as HPLC and ICP.
- Background in quality control and laboratory testing for raw materials, in-process samples, and final product.
- Ability to manage and review batch records, Certificates of Analysis, and other quality documentation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in a laboratory and production environment.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues across all disciplines and levels within the facility and corporate functions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working under multiple regulatory and certification schemes, such as food-grade and fertilizer-related standards.
- Familiarity with quality systems and continuous improvement of processes and procedures.
- Comfort interacting with production personnel in an active manufacturing environment, including areas with forklift traffic.
- Ability to learn and adhere to plant-specific quality and safety certifications and requirements.
- Willingness to work staggered shifts and rotate for weekend support during peak fertilizer season.
- Strong attention to detail when reviewing Certificates of Analysis, labels, and batch documentation.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small quality team.
Work Environment
The role is primarily based in a laboratory that works with industrial chemicals used for fertilizer and food-grade applications. Approximately 85% of the time is spent in the lab performing testing, documentation, and equipment maintenance, while about 15% of the time is spent on the production floor or providing documentation support. The area outside the lab is an active production environment where team members regularly interact with production personnel, including individuals operating forklifts, and communicate using walkie-talkies. The quality team consists of three technicians working staggered shifts, with one to two technicians in the lab at any given time. Available schedules include second shift (MondayFriday, 3:00 p.m.11:30 p.m.), third shift (MondayFriday, 11:00 p.m.7:30 a.m.), and first shift (MondayFriday, 6:00 a.m.2:00 p.m., with training between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m). During the busy fertilizer season starting in March, weekend support may be required. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
