About this role
At Sonos we want to create the ultimate listening experience for our customers and know that it starts by listening to each other. As part of the Sonos team, you’ll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives.
As a Mechanical Engineer (IC4), you’ll serve as a recognized technical leader and subject-matter expert—owning mechanical architecture and driving solutions that span multiple projects and cross-functional partners. You’ll anticipate mid-term technical risks, define standards and methodologies, and mentor engineers to raise the overall quality and effectiveness of the mechanical engineering team. Your work will directly shape program outcomes across performance, reliability, manufacturability, and customer experience.
What You’ll Do
- Own mechanical architecture and integration strategy for major modules or product platforms, defining interfaces and design standards.
- Drive cross-functional technical alignment across Industrial Design, Acoustics, EE, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain for complex design tradeoffs.
- Anticipate and mitigate technical risks across multiple build phases and programs.
- Establish and evolve mechanical design methodologies (e.g., tolerance management approach, material/process selection frameworks, DFM/DFA gates).
- Lead complex investigations and corrective actions for systemic build/reliability issues; ensure solutions are validated and scalable.
- Provide technical leadership across programs: run design reviews, coach engineers, and raise documentation and design rigor.
- Guide supplier capability development and manufacturing readiness (tooling strategy, process capability, yield improvements, cost reductions).
- Define mechanical deliverables, schedules, and execution plans for multi-functional projects; proactively manage dependencies.
- Influence engineering roadmaps by proposing new technologies, tools, or processes that improve product outcomes.
- Mentor and sponsor growth for IC1–IC3 engineers, scaling expertise through the team.
What You’ll Need
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field.
- 8+ years of relevant mechanical/product development experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in mechanical architecture, tolerance strategy, and design for high-volume manufacturing.
- Proven ability to lead through influence across functions and guide complex technical decisions with incomplete information.
- Strong English communication skills, including delivering clear, persuasive technical narratives to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to work from an office/partner/supplier location (Shanghai or Penang) 3–4 days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Multiple shipped products in consumer electronics or similarly high-volume hardware environments.
- Deep experience in one or more areas: plastic/metal design at scale, sealing/IP strategy, vibration control, thermal management, reliability engineering, acoustic enclosure integration.
- Experience defining team standards, best practices, or new engineering processes adopted across programs.
Your profile will be reviewed and you'll hear from us once we have an update. At Sonos we take the time to hire right and appreciate your patience.
