Job Summary

The Product Functional Test Mechanical Technician - Level II is responsible for preparing, building, installing, and supporting test articles, test systems, and laboratory equipment used in product validation and functional testing activities. This role supports engine and component testing by performing test setup, instrumentation installation, troubleshooting, engine handling, and data collection activities while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and engineering standards.

The position requires hands-on technical expertise in test cell operations, engine systems, laboratory equipment, and test methodologies to ensure accurate and reliable test results that support product development and validation objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Test Preparation & Execution

- Prepare test articles, fixtures, rigs, instrumentation, and associated equipment for testing activities.

- Install instrumentation and measurement devices in accordance with engineering standards and test requirements.

- Conduct and support product testing in accordance with approved test procedures, methodologies, and project plans.

- Monitor and document test execution to ensure accurate and reliable test results.

- Support engine, subsystem, and component functional testing activities.

Engine Test Cell Operations

- Conduct and monitor engine tests based on approved test plans and engineering requirements.

- Perform installation, removal, assembly, and disassembly of engines and related systems within test cells.

- Execute necessary modifications to engines and test setups to support testing objectives.

- Support continuous test cell operations, including shift-based and 24/7 testing activities when required.

- Maintain working knowledge of engine systems, test cell equipment, and laboratory operations.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

- Perform preliminary troubleshooting of engine, instrumentation, test stand, and test cell-related issues.

- Support test stand setup, configuration, installation, and maintenance activities.

- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure operational readiness.

- Participate in preventive and predictive maintenance activities to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.

- Identify and resolve technical issues impacting test execution and data quality.

Data Collection & Reporting

- Verify equipment calibration and instrumentation readiness before testing.

- Collect, validate, and document test data in accordance with established procedures.

- Prepare test reports, records, and documentation that clearly communicate testing methods, observations, and results.

- Support engineers and project teams by providing accurate and reliable test information.

- Ensure data integrity and adherence to quality requirements throughout the testing process.

Safety, Quality & Continuous Improvement

- Follow all Health, Safety, Environment (HSE), Quality Management System (QMS), and laboratory procedures.

- Conduct risk assessments and comply with Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and other safety requirements.

- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including TBWS (The Cummins Way) activities.

- Collaborate effectively with project teams, engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders to improve testing processes and operational efficiency.

Skills & Experience Required

- Hands-on experience supporting product testing, engine testing, laboratory operations, or related technical environments.
- Strong knowledge of engine systems, components, and test cell operations.
- Experience with test stand setup, instrumentation installation, and troubleshooting activities.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, test equipment, and measurement techniques.
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and laboratory quality practices.
- Understanding of safety procedures, risk assessment processes, and LOTO requirements.
- Experience in preventive and predictive maintenance practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic reporting tools.
- Familiarity with AVL PUMA test cell systems is considered an advantage.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and support continuous operations when required.

Experience

- Some relevant work experience in testing, mechanical systems, laboratory operations, manufacturing, automotive, or product validation environments.
- Experience supporting engine testing, troubleshooting, instrumentation, and test cell operations preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work safely, follow procedures, and contribute to high-quality testing outcomes.
