A Brief Overview
The Executive Director, Planned Giving strategically directs and manages the Hospital's gift planning program, ensuring increased giving from charitable bequests, life income gifts, non-cash assets, and other planned giving vehicles.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Individual Giving, the Senior Director, Planned Giving represents the CHOP Foundation by working with donors, prospects, and their legal and financial advisors to establish bequests and gift other non-cash assets to advance the Hospital's mission. In this leadership role, the Senior Director oversees the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals making deferred and other specially structured gifts, and provides education to donors who are considering making planned gifts or involving complex gift structures. The position manages a pool of individual planned giving prospects, provides strategies for cultivating current and deferred planned gifts, and serves as the expert advisor within the Foundation on all gift planning solicitations. The Senior Director will also oversee the marketing and promotion of planned gifts through direct mail, e-solicitation, seminars, web, gift/recognition societies, and related marketing promotions. As a member of the Individual Giving team, the Senior Director provides counsel, technical support, and training for development staff and senior leadership with regard to the various giving vehicles and gift design.
Furthermore, the Executive Director of Planned giving serves as CHOP's expert for planned giving, supporting all planned giving activity across the enterprise. Such support includes supporting CHOP leadership including the CEO and CDO in developing and delivering planned giving strategies for top prospects as appropriate. The Senior Director of Planned Giving will also partner across the Foundation to ensure the development of planned giving strategies for top prospects to maximize campaign and general fundraising success.
What you will do
- Fundraising:
- Manage a portfolio of 75 key major/planned giving prospects having an interest in a planned gift. Provide technical expertise and gift planning assistance to donors and their financial/legal advisors who are capable of making a major/planned gift of $100,000 or more.
- Close current gifts of assets, life income gifts, and estate gifts as well as support gift officer colleagues working with donors on gifts of this nature.
- Develop proactive, thoughtful strategies to lead to increased giving together with Foundation and Hospital leadership and colleagues.
- Collaborate with financial advisors, attorneys, and other relevant advisors regarding planned gifts.
- Partner with Individual Giving, Principal Gift, and other colleagues to develop planned giving strategies for top prospects maximizing philanthropic support and impact.
- Support strategy development and prepare briefings for CEO, Chief Development Officer, Vice President of Development, Associate Vice President, Individual Giving and other Hospital leadership as appropriate.
- Engage with enterprise partners including Finance and Marketing and Public Relations to develop policies, practices, and processes to support planned giving activity as appropriate.
- Program Management:
- Manage and mentor planned giving office staff, including one planned giving officer and one coordinator.
- Develop long-term strategy for the planned giving program that supports the Foundation and campaign goals.
- Work closely with major gift staff to provide technical support, to increase awareness of complex and deferred gift vehicles, and to cultivate new donors.
- Provide training for major gift staff in matters related to gift planning.
- Develop an annual operating plan for program growth.
- Maintain strong knowledge of current tax laws and rules related to charitable planned gifts.
- Develop and manage program budget.
- Oversee planned gift administration in collaboration with Finance department and various vendors.
- Monitor the Hospital's financial interest in open estates and manage probate process in coordination with CHOP Legal and Finance depts. to ensure timely distribution of realized bequests to CHOP.
- Co-captain the Gift Acceptance Committee, developing policies and practices to ensure quality management of non-cash assets.
- Marketing and Stewardship:
- Design and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive Gift Planning marketing program including direct mail, seminars, electronic, and web-based strategies.
- Provide direction and final approval of print and digital gift planning marketing developed in conjunction with Hospital Marketing team.
- Promote the Lewis Society, the Hospital's gift planning recognition society, and develop a comprehensive stewardship plan, including recognition programs, presentations, and other relevant events and programs.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Required
- Master's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least seven (7) years experience in development Required and
- At least three (3) years experience in planned giving Required and
- At least seven (7) years experience in wealth management, law, or financial planning Required
- At least ten (10) years Development experience in a large, complex organization Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic estate and financial planning concepts and the fundamentals of fundraising and proposal development. (Required proficiency)
- Knowledge of how particular charitable options affect the donor's and/or the income recipient's tax situations. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications
- Membership in the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning - Planned Giving Design Center - upon hire - Required

SALARY RANGE:
$142,700.00 - $189,100.00 Annually
Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
