Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer Job Description
The Manufacturing Engineer provides hands-on engineering support to production by assessing and resolving manufacturing issues, developing and improving assembly processes, and designing fixtures and tooling. This role focuses on driving process improvements, maintaining and troubleshooting manufacturing equipment, and collaborating closely with production, quality, and tooling teams to ensure efficient, high-quality manufacturing operations.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day engineering support to manufacturing to assess, diagnose, and resolve production and assembly problems.
- Develop and improve manufacturing and assembly processes to increase efficiency, quality, and consistency.
- Design, qualify, and implement fixtures and tooling for use in the assembly and manufacturing processes.
- Perform mechanical maintenance on manufacturing equipment and machinery to support reliable operation.
- Support production by troubleshooting tooling, fixtures, equipment, and processes when defects or nonconformances occur.
- Lead and participate in continuous improvement projects to optimize processes, reduce waste, and enhance throughput.
- Train assemblers on the proper usage, handling, and care of tooling, fixtures, and equipment.
- Serve as a technical resource for assemblers, helping interpret engineering prints and explaining assembly procedures.
- Work directly with toolmakers and machinists to ensure a mutual understanding of product requirements, specifications, and standards.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance and other departments to prioritize and resolve production and quality issues to keep manufacturing running smoothly.
- Manage multiple engineering projects and responsibilities simultaneously, balancing priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Document process changes, fixture designs, and improvements to support repeatability and knowledge sharing.
Essential Skills
- Experience in manufacturing engineering and process engineering within a production environment.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot manufacturing processes, equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
- Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance and mechanical maintenance on manufacturing equipment and machinery.
- Demonstrated capability in process improvement and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical understanding of mechanical systems and assemblies.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for tooling, fixture, and component design.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and prints and translate them into clear instructions for assemblers.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate productively with coworkers across departments.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience in electronics or manual assembly environments is beneficial.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Experience with AS9100 Quality Management Systems is preferred but not required.
- Background in tooling and fixture design for manufacturing and assembly.
- Ability to train and mentor production staff on new processes, tools, and fixtures.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on root cause analysis and sustainable corrective actions.
Work Environment
This role operates in a manufacturing and assembly environment that involves close collaboration with production, quality, toolroom, and maintenance teams. The Manufacturing Engineer works on and around manufacturing equipment, machinery, tooling, and fixtures, frequently moving between office and shop floor settings. Work typically involves using SolidWorks and Microsoft Office on a computer, as well as spending significant time on the production floor observing processes, troubleshooting issues, and supporting assemblers and machinists. The environment emphasizes safety, quality, and continuous improvement, with a culture of teamwork and open communication to meet shared manufacturing goals.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $43.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
