Join Boston Scientific as an R&D Manager within the Active Implantable Systems Mechanical Hardware organization in Arden Hills, Minnesota. In this role, you will lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers responsible for critical aspects of pulse generator mechanical design, including electronic assemblies, device headers and feedthroughs, while advancing both new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives across divisions in Boston Scientific.
This technical people-leadership role combines team development and organizational leadership with technical direction and functional project oversight. You will establish structure and priorities across the team, provide coaching and career development for engineers, and apply your technical expertise to solve complex problems and develop effective strategies. You will also oversee mechanical engineering workstreams within key projects, helping ensure technical deliverables, design documentation and verification activities are completed effectively and on schedule.
This is an on-site position based in Arden Hills, Minnesota, with the expectation that employees work on-site each day and occasional work-from-home flexibility as appropriate. Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead, manage and develop a team of approximately 5-10 mechanical engineers, potentially including contractors, providing regular coaching, performance feedback, career development and technical guidance.
- Provide technical leadership and direction for mechanical design activities associated with Active Implantable Systems, including electronic assemblies, device headers, feedthroughs and related components and interfaces.
- Guide mechanical engineering activities across new product development and sustaining programs, helping the team solve complex problems, establish strategies and make sound technical decisions.
- Provide functional management oversight for mechanical engineering workstreams on key projects by establishing priorities, monitoring progress, identifying risks, coordinating resources and ensuring deliverables are completed effectively and on schedule.
- Oversee the development and execution of mechanical design verification and validation activities, including test method development and validation, test planning, and design verification and validation test execution.
- Ensure high-quality, timely completion of design documentation and Quality System deliverables, including engineering drawings, bills of material (BOMs), design records, test documentation and other required product development records.
- Partner closely with Electrical Hardware, Systems Engineering, Firmware, Project Management, Regulatory, Process Development and other cross-functional stakeholders to align strategies, resolve issues and achieve project objectives.
- Establish effective team processes, resource plans, priorities and ways of working that create clarity and accountability while promoting technical excellence, employee engagement and individual career growth.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or another engineering discipline with a mechanical focus, minor or equivalent formal concentration.
- Minimum of 8 years' technical engineering experience, including experience supporting new product development projects.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in leadership, supervision, project management, people management or engineering team leadership roles.
- Mechanical engineering experience in product design and development.
- Experience providing technical leadership on complex engineering projects, including problem-solving, development of engineering strategies and execution of project deliverables.
- Proficiency in developing and maintaining engineering design documentation, including engineering drawings, bills of material, design records, test protocols or equivalent technical documentation.
- Hands-on involvement in product verification and validation activities, including engineering test method development, test method validation and/or design verification testing.
- Ability to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.
Preferred qualifications:
- Background in developing Class III or active implantable medical devices.
- Familiarity with cardiac rhythm management products, pulse generators or other implantable electronic medical devices.
- Knowledge of medical device product development within a regulated Quality System and design control environment.
- Experience with mechanical design of electronic assemblies, device headers, feedthroughs, hermetic enclosures or related electromechanical products.
- Hands-on involvement in test method development and validation, as well as design verification and validation in a regulated product development environment.
- Exposure to both new product development and sustaining engineering activities.
- Proven success coaching and developing engineers across a range of technical and experience levels.
- Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, create organizational structure and manage engineering resources across multiple activities and projects.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical and project issues.
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or a related technical field and/or an MBA.

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.
Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
