About this role

The AVP, Commercial Insurance Underwriting leads the Commercial Insurance underwriting portfolio, with accountability for underwriting operations, profitable growth, and retention across a multi-line book of business. This is a production-oriented underwriting role supporting the Harrisburg marketplace, with a focus on both new business production and renewal business. This leader drives new business production and portfolio management across key sectors including Technology, Manufacturing, Life Sciences, and Food, while building strong internal and external relationships. The role supports distribution partners across the assigned territory and leads underwriting and marketing initiatives through direct reports and regional resources to engage agents, brokers, and clients.

Production, Territory & Portfolio Development

- Own P&L performance for the Commercial Insurance P&C portfolio, including premium, profitability, growth, retention, and expense management, with a focus on expanding the Lower Middle Market portfolio and high-margin segments such as Technology and Life Sciences.
- Forecast monthly production, annual plans, and pipeline for the Commercial Insurance portfolio, providing timely, accurate reporting to leadership and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Develop and execute territory strategies to deepen broker and client relationships and capitalize on local market opportunities.
- Drive growth of Multinational, Environmental, A&H, Marine, and Financial Lines in partnership with Specialty, Product, and Segment leaders through targeted marketing, cross-sell, and coordinated go-to-market activity.
- Collaborate with Field Operations to ensure effective expense administration and resource deployment.

Underwriting Strategy, Technical Leadership & Risk Governance

- Lead execution of underwriting strategy for new and renewal business, ensuring disciplined risk selection, pricing, and terms across the portfolio and in coordination with remote underwriting resources.
- Serve as a technical underwriting referral resource in partnership with Product, acting as the key contact for complex risks and accounts outside local field authority and coordinating with Home Office, Product, and Segment leaders as needed.
- Oversee underwriting quality, file standards, and governance to meet enterprise expectations for audit, compliance, and authority usage.

Business Development & Distribution Management

- Develop and execute local market strategies, providing insights on market conditions and broker/agency needs while positioning Chubb as a preferred market.
- Partner closely with Field Operations to design and execute marketing and distribution plans for the full Commercial Insurance portfolio, aligning underwriting, sales, and operations around production and retention objectives.
- Direct business development activities, including support for key programs, products, and initiatives, and provide guidance on prospecting, pipeline management, and deal execution.
- Travel regularly within the territory for broker, client, and team meetings in support of business development and distribution objectives.

Team & Talent Management

- Lead, coach, and develop underwriting staff, including onboarding, training, performance management, mentorship, and succession planning, while fostering an inclusive, collaborative culture.
- Ensure effective deployment of staff and clear role alignment across assigned locations, maintaining mentoring and development relationships with high-potential Senior Underwriters and Team Leaders.
- Oversee workflows, staffing resources, and use of technology to support efficient, cost-effective field operations and consistent service to brokers and clients.
- Partner with HR and regional leadership on performance management, compensation processes, and talent decisions to attract, develop, and retain top underwriting talent

- 5+ years of multi-line underwriting experience with a strong understanding of P&C lines of business, industry practices, products, and appetite
- Strong understanding of field distribution channels, including brokers, regional partners, and independent agents
