Position Summary:
The Specialist, State Government Relations provides research, supports legislative tracking and drafts written products that support the departments state policy work. The position operates in a fast-paced environment and is responsible for (1) tracking state legislation; (2) conducting policy research and summarizing findings; (3) drafting state policy resources and department communications; (4) coordinating logistics for the annual State Dementia Services Coordinator Summit; (5) working on programs, projects, and briefings sponsored by the State Government Relations department; and (6) providing administrative and meeting support to department staff.
This position will interact considerably with other members of the State Government Relations team, staff in other departments within the policy office, and state government relations staff in the field in all 50 states who are advancing state policies around access to diagnostics and treatment, insurance coverage, Medicaid, caregiving and public health.
This position reports to the Director of State Policy and is based in the Association's Home Office in Washington, D.C.
Responsibilities:
Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
● Assists with state legislative tracking and supports the use of the tracking system by field staff.
● Conducts policy research and drafts state policy materials.
● Drafts and edits State Government Relations team products and communications including weekly newsletter content, department news updates, policy resources for field staff, website and intranet information, and annual summaries of state government relations activities.
● Assists with the management of all major state policy data sources and databases and collects related information from field staff.
● Develops PowerPoint slides for team presentations to internal and external audiences.
● Leads on logistical coordination and execution of the State Dementia Services Coordinator Summit, an annual convening of state agency officials.
● Provides administrative support to the State Government Relations team including supporting all on-site and virtual meetings, preparing meeting materials, and assisting with meeting follow-up activities.
● Other duties, programs, projects, and briefings sponsored by the State Government Relations department, as assigned.
Qualifications:
● A bachelor's degree is required.
● A minimum of two years of professional experience in a government affairs setting, with strong written and oral communications skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Excellent written and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential.
● Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and proactively communicate progress and issues.
● Detail-oriented and highly organized with effective time management and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
● Strong PowerPoint and other computer skills (Microsoft 365, videoconferencing, databases).
● Previous experience working in a government affairs office or within state or federal government.
● Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for the job and to travel up to 5%.

Position Grade & Compensation: Grade 406 The Alzheimer's Associations good faith expectation for the salary range for this role is $70,000 - $77,000
