FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly
Schedule: Full-time: Monday - Friday 4pm-12am, Tuesday - Saturday 12am-8am (Overnight)
Part-time: Flexible schedule needed. Availability for day, night, weekends and holidays required.

WCBay's Safety & Emergency department is a dedicated, service-focused team that works hard to keep the campus safe, secure, and welcoming for everyone. As a Safety & Emergency Officer , you will help create a safe, secure, and reassuring environment for residents, families, team members, guests, and visitors throughout Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay's waterfront campus. This role is primarily focused on campus safety, emergency response, and resident support . Officers serve as an important first response resource when medical emergencies, accidents, injuries, fire alarms, severe weather, security concerns, or other urgent situations occur. The role requires individuals who can remain calm, assess situations, follow established emergency procedures, provide appropriate assistance within their training, and quickly coordinate with emergency services and other internal resources when needed. Officers also perform campus safety and security functions, including access control, patrols, parking enforcement, incident documentation, and monitoring of security systems.

What You'll Do In This Role

Emergency Response & Resident Safety

- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, accidents, falls, fire alarms, severe weather, security concerns, and other urgent situations.

- Assess situations, provide assistance within the scope of training, and activate 911 or other emergency resources as needed.

- Provide first aid and CPR/AED assistance in accordance with current certifications, training, and established procedures.

- Remain calm, professional, and respectful when responding to emergencies, including life-threatening situations and incidents involving death.

- Assist residents, team members, families, and visitors during emergencies while maintaining dignity, privacy, and sensitivity.

- Assist EMS, fire/rescue, law enforcement, and other first responders as needed.

- Follow established procedures when responding to a deceased individual, including securing the area, notifying appropriate personnel, and completing required postmortem procedures.

- Support emergency preparedness and response, including evacuations, shelter-in-place situations, fire emergencies, severe weather, and campus-wide events.

- Identify and report safety hazards, unsafe conditions, and potential risks, including concerns involving residents with varying mobility, cognitive, or physical needs.

Campus Safety & Security

- Conduct routine patrols of buildings, grounds, parking areas, and other designated campus locations.

- Monitor campus activity and respond professionally to safety and security concerns.

- Monitor access points, alarms, cameras, doors, and other security systems; assist with after-hours building access.

- Respond to alarms and investigate concerns in accordance with established procedures.

- Enforce parking requirements and address parking or traffic concerns throughout campus.

- Communicate campus maintenance, safety, or security concerns to Facilities, Security, Environmental Services, or other appropriate departments.

- Maintain a visible, approachable, and service-oriented presence throughout campus.

Documentation & Communication

- Complete timely, accurate, objective documentation of emergency responses, incidents, accidents, safety concerns, and security events.

- Communicate relevant information promptly to supervisors, clinical leaders, administrators, emergency responders, and other appropriate personnel.

- Maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive resident, medical, or incident-related information.

- Participate in required emergency drills, training, and exercises.

- Maintain familiarity with campus emergency procedures, communication protocols, building layouts, and emergency equipment.

Resident & Campus Service

- Interact with residents, families, team members, guests, and visitors with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.

- Provide assistance and directions throughout campus while maintaining a welcoming environment.

- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of older adults and respect residents dignity, privacy, independence, and choice.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to move throughout a large campus, including indoor and outdoor areas, in varying weather conditions.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and respond quickly to emergency situations.

- Ability to assist with emergency response activities within the scope of training and physical capability.

- Ability to operate emergency communication equipment and other safety/security technology.

- May encounter situations involving bodily fluids, injuries, illness, death, or other potentially distressing circumstances.

- May work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and other non-standard hours based on operational needs.

- May be exposed to unpredictable, stressful, or potentially hazardous situations requiring immediate response and sound judgment.

The Experience You'll Bring

Required

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- At least one year of experience in emergency response, healthcare, senior living, public safety, security, military service, fire/rescue, or a related field.

- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

- Ability to obtain and maintain required security, emergency response, CPR/AED, first aid, and other applicable certifications within established timeframes (provided by WCBay!)

Preferred

- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), EMT, or other relevant emergency-response training.
