About this role
Assistant Project Manager — Water & Wastewater Treatment Construction
Location: Northwest Connecticut (Greater Hartford region) — onsite, split between the office and active project sites
Pay Rate: $80,000–$110,000 base salary, based on experience, plus an annual merit-based bonus
Overview
Our client is a self-performing general contractor specializing in water and wastewater treatment plant construction. Projects span heavy civil, industrial, and mechanical scopes, including process piping, mechanical systems, concrete, and controls, primarily for municipal owners.
The team is experienced and low-turnover, with staff ranging from early-career professionals to industry veterans. Senior leadership is actively involved in training and developing newer team members. The environment is fast-paced and high-intensity.
The Assistant Project Manager will report to a Project Manager and/or Project Engineer, with project assignment based on experience and current workload. On projects over $25M, the Assistant Project Manager is dedicated to a single project; on smaller projects, they may support two or three at once. Office and field time varies by project phase: early stages are documentation-focused and mostly office-based, mid-construction requires more time on site, and on the largest projects the full management team works from the jobsite.
Day-to-day:
- Shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and project documentation
- Supporting CPM schedules and monitoring project progress
- Coordinating with owners, architects, engineers, suppliers, subcontractors, and field teams
- Attending project and coordination meetings alongside the Project Manager
- Change orders, cost proposals, and project budgets
- Procurement, pricing, buyouts, and material expediting
- Tracking project costs, man-hours, expenses, and monthly billing
- Maintaining project files, communication procedures, and project controls
- Making sure contracts, permits, approvals, and project requirements are followed
- Working directly with the Superintendent and subcontractors to resolve field issues
- Keeping the Construction Manager informed on progress and potential issues
- Supporting estimating and helping identify new work
- Helping oversee Project Engineers and Foremen, including input on performance and bonus/raise evaluations
- Project closeout, including final documentation and as-built drawings
Software: Microsoft Office, Procore (primary project management platform), and Trimble
Compensation & Perks
- $80,000–$110,000 base salary, based on experience
- Annual year-end bonus based on individual merit
- Typical split of roughly 3 days in the office and 2 in the field, varying with each project's phase and size
- Full benefits, Medical, Dental and vision coverage (company covers 80% of premiums and 50% of deductible!)
- 401(k) with a company match
- A clear growth path from Assistant Project Manager to Project Manager and on to a VP-level project leadership role
- A hands-on, collaborative culture where seasoned specialists actively mentor and the work itself is meaningful public infrastructure
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience in construction project management or project engineering
- Heavy civil, environmental, water/wastewater, industrial, or mechanical construction background strongly preferred; candidates whose experience is limited to residential or light commercial work will find the transition to treatment plant construction difficult

- Ability to understand and manage project costs, budgets, and billing
- Comfortable splitting time between the office and active jobsites, including extended periods onsite during major projects
- A hands-on, collaborative working style that fits a self-performing, high-intensity environment
