About this role
To perform fabrication fitting activities involving plates, pipes, structural steel, and engineering components as per approved engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and project specifications. The Fabrication Fitter is responsible for material marking, cutting preparation, fit-up, alignment, assembly, and dimensional accuracy before welding and final inspection.
2. Key Responsibilities
Read and interpret engineering fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and dimensional details.
Identify and verify raw materials such as MS plates, pipes, angles, channels, beams, and structural sections as per job requirements.
Carry out material marking, measurement, layout, and cutting preparation according to approved drawings.
Perform fit-up and assembly of fabricated components using appropriate tools, clamps, jigs, fixtures, and measuring instruments.
Align plates, pipes, flanges, structural members, and other components as per specified dimensions and tolerances.
Check root gaps, bevel angles, joint alignment, squareness, level, and orientation before welding.
Perform tack fitting and coordinate with welders to ensure correct positioning and dimensional stability.
Use measuring tapes, spirit levels, squares, straightedges, vernier calipers, and other relevant measuring tools.
Assist in the fabrication of structural assemblies, equipment supports, frames, skids, platforms, and piping components as applicable.
Carry out grinding, deburring, edge preparation, and minor adjustments to achieve the required fit-up.
Verify dimensions and alignment during intermediate fabrication stages and rectify fitting discrepancies.
Coordinate with welders, helpers, supervisors, and quality inspectors to resolve fabrication issues.
Follow approved drawings, welding procedures, work instructions, and applicable quality requirements.
Ensure proper identification, traceability, and handling of materials and fabricated components where required.
Maintain tools and equipment in good condition and ensure proper housekeeping in the work area.
Follow all applicable safety procedures, including PPE requirements, hot-work precautions, and safe material-handling practices.
3. Technical Skills and Competencies
Ability to read and understand fabrication and assembly drawings.
Knowledge of fabrication fit-up, alignment, marking, and dimensional measurement.
Understanding of welding joint preparation, root gap, bevel angle, and tack welding requirements.
Familiarity with MS, carbon steel, stainless steel, and other engineering materials as applicable.
Ability to use hand tools, power tools, clamps, jigs, and measuring instruments.
Knowledge of dimensional tolerances, squareness, parallelism, and level checking.
Ability to identify drawing discrepancies and report technical issues to the supervisor.
Good teamwork, communication, discipline, and problem-solving skills.
4. Qualification and Experience
ITI in Fitter or a relevant engineering trade is preferred.
2–5 years of experience in fabrication fitting, structural fabrication, equipment fabrication, or a related field is preferred.
Experience in industrial fabrication workshops or project sites is an advantage.
Ability to work independently according to drawings and supervisor instructions.
5. Quality and Safety Responsibilities
Ensure all fit-up dimensions comply with approved drawings and project specifications.
Verify material size, orientation, alignment, and joint preparation before welding.
Avoid unauthorized modifications to drawings or fabricated components.
Report dimensional deviations, material defects, and fit-up issues to the supervisor or quality department.
Use appropriate PPE and follow safe operating procedures for grinding and other tools.
Ensure lifting and positioning activities are performed using approved equipment and methods.
