About this role
The Fabrication Welder is responsible for performing welding activities on piping, structural steel, storage tanks, pressure vessels, equipment components, and other fabricated items in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), applicable codes, project specifications, and quality requirements.
The role involves preparing materials, executing welding joints, controlling welding parameters, maintaining weld quality, preventing defects, and coordinating with fitters, fabricators, welding inspectors, and QA/QC personnel to ensure that fabricated products meet the required quality and safety standards.
3. Key Responsibilities
A. Welding Operations
Perform welding activities on carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and other specified materials according to the approved WPS and assigned qualification.
Carry out SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GTAW/TIG (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), GMAW/MIG, FCAW, or SAW welding, as applicable to the welder's qualification and project requirements.
Weld piping spools, pipe joints, structural members, brackets, supports, tank components, and other fabricated assemblies.
Perform root pass, hot pass, fill passes, and cap passes in accordance with the approved welding procedure.
Maintain the specified welding current, voltage, travel speed, electrode type, filler material, and other essential parameters.
Follow the approved welding sequence to minimize distortion, residual stress, and dimensional variation.
Ensure proper fusion between the base metal and weld metal.
Produce welds that meet the specified requirements for weld profile, reinforcement, penetration, and workmanship.
Maintain consistent arc length, electrode angle, travel speed, and interpass cleaning.
Stop welding and report any abnormal welding conditions, material defects, or procedure-related concerns.
B. Material Preparation and Joint Fit-Up
Review the assigned welding joint, drawing, weld identification number, and applicable WPS before starting work.
Verify that the material grade, thickness, joint configuration, and welding process are appropriate for the assigned work.
Check the prepared joint for cleanliness, bevel angle, root face, root gap, and alignment as specified.
Remove rust, oil, grease, paint, moisture, scale, and other contaminants from the weld area.
Coordinate with pipe fitters and fabricators to confirm that joint fit-up meets approved drawings and tolerances.
Confirm that tack welds are suitable and acceptable before proceeding.
Report incorrect fit-up, excessive root gaps, mismatch, damaged bevels, or material identification issues to the supervisor.
Avoid unauthorized grinding, cutting, or alteration of materials that could affect joint integrity.
Ensure that the correct consumables are available before commencing welding.
C. Welding Procedure and Code Compliance
Follow the approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) for every applicable welding activity.
Work only within the range of the welder's valid qualification and authorization.
Understand the applicable welding process, material group, thickness range, diameter range, welding position, and other qualification limitations relevant to the assigned work.
Follow the applicable project codes, including API, ASME, AWS, and other specified standards.
Verify preheat and interpass temperature requirements where specified.
Follow requirements for post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) by coordinating with authorized personnel; do not independently change prescribed heat-treatment requirements.
Use the specified filler metals, electrodes, shielding gases, and fluxes.
Follow requirements for low-hydrogen electrode storage, holding ovens, and electrode issue and return control where applicable.
Do not substitute welding consumables or modify approved welding parameters without authorization.
Report any deviation from the WPS or project specifications to the Welding Supervisor.
D. Piping and Pressure Equipment Fabrication
Perform welding on piping spools, fittings, flanges, elbows, tees, reducers, branch connections, and other piping components.
Weld pressure-retaining components only when appropriately qualified and assigned to the relevant approved procedure.
Follow specified requirements for root penetration, internal alignment, weld profile, and joint preparation.
