About this role
The Castings Manufacturing Engineering Group (Materials Engineering) is responsible for the design, build, launch, and handover of state-of-the-art casting lines and equipment for vehicle and humanoid programs. Between Optimus and Vehicles, that includes standing up a new casting shop — melt furnaces, hydraulic presses, casting cells, and all supporting process utilities — and delivering it production-ready.
Tesla is looking for an experienced, field-driven Construction Project Manager to be the on-site leader of installation for the Optimus casting shop. This is not a behind a desk role. You will own day-to-day field execution: leading craft and contractors, driving productivity, clearing constraints, and holding the line on safety, quality, and schedule work from planning through installation, inspection, commissioning support, and turnover.
This position requires deep attention to construction and tool-install details — specifically the activity sequence needed to achieve fast, efficient, safe, and high-quality manufacturing line installations in a casting environment. Work will demand extreme planning up front and disciplined execution in tight windows, with no room for failure. Positive, outside-the-box thinking is a must. You are the installation leader in the field.
This role is 100% on-site in Austin Texas with some occasional travel.
- Own day-to-day field supervision for casting shop installation — casting lines, melt furnaces, hydraulic presses, supporting equipment, and process utilities — directing craft and contractor crews from Workfront release through installation, inspection, and completion
- Serve as the primary on-site installation leader for the Casting Manufacturing Team, accountable for turning plans into installed, production-ready work
- Drive crew productivity and work-packaging execution, ensuring labor, materials, equipment, rigging plans, and information are ready at the workface before installation starts
- Lead installation sequencing for heavy industrial equipment typical of casting operations (furnaces, presses, casting cells, conveyors, scrap/return systems, and related process equipment)
- Plan installation logistics, track material and equipment deliveries, and own look-ahead schedules for assigned work fronts
- Identify and remove constraints in real time — design clashes, material gaps, access/rigging conflicts, quality holds, utility interfaces, and sequencing issues — before they impact tool install, press commissioning, or start-up milestones
- Maintain a safe, clean work site; identify and correct hazards; resolve field clashes quickly with the right stakeholders (QC, QA, CX, Facilities, EHS)
- 5+ years of superintendent or senior field supervision experience on major capital / industrial projects
- Demonstrated leadership of large craft and/or contractor crews under aggressive delivery schedules in a manufacturing construction or tool-install environment
- Hands-on experience installing or supervising installation of heavy manufacturing equipment (e.g., process lines, furnaces, presses, or equivalent capital equipment systems)
- Strong working knowledge of manufacturing construction methods in one or more core disciplines: mechanical/piping, structural/rigging, or process/tool install — with the ability to coordinate across multiple interfaces
- Proven ability to read drawings and specs, run effective look-ahead planning, and clear workface constraints quickly
- Decisive, field-present leader who sets the pace, communicates clearly, and holds crews accountable for safety, quality, and output
- High energy and extreme ownership: solve the problem in front of you and keep the casting shop install moving toward ramp
