About this role
Tesla’s Drive Systems Engineering (DSE) group is seeking a skilled, highly motivated metrology engineer with a strong quality assurance background. You will be part of a specialized team advancing Tesla’s Drive Systems to produce the world’s best electric propulsion systems.
As a metrology engineer, you will discover, develop, and improve the measurement methods and inspection technologies that support design engineering objectives. You will apply metrology science and precision engineering to dimensional, form, and surface finish measurement, calibration, and performance evaluation of measurement systems, from both sensing and algorithm perspectives.
You will work closely with Drive Systems Design, Materials Engineering, and the Prototype Machine Shop to deliver high-quality drive system components at the front line of engineering development. You will advise on design for measurability and process development, and share learnings from early prototype samples across Tesla’s global factories and suppliers as products move into production.
- Participate in drive unit part design reviews and provide feedback on part design, specifications, and GD&T from a design-for-measurability perspective
- Establish inspection workflows and measurement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for drive unit parts at Tesla facilities and production vendors
- Lead custom instrumentation development (hardware and software) projects to support drive unit part design and manufacturing
- Develop programs for inspection equipment such as CMM, GMM, optical scanning system and tactile profilometers, and perform metrology inspections
- Generate standardized documentation and inspection reports, and train metrology technicians on inspection tasks
- Support production vendors’ metrology capability qualification and develop preventive strategies for volume production
- Support quality investigations and engineering root cause analysis for Tesla drive unit parts using DSE metrology resources
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent experience
- 3+ years in manufacturing and quality assurance in an ISO 9001:2015-compliant environment
- Experience with CMM and/or GMM programming or equivalent capability (Zeiss Calypso CMM and Gleason/Klingelnberg GMM preferred)
- Thorough knowledge of engineering drawings, testing documents, and ASMEY14.5-2018 GD&T
- Experience using part drawings and inspection data for complex tolerance stack-up analysis
- Experience with Design of Experiments and modeling tools: JMP, Minitab, MATLAB, or Python
- Experience in optical metrology methods and metallurgical inspection of heat-treated parts is a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to develop and present technical information to cross-functional teams
