About this role

Position Summary

The Interventionist Assistant supports K–8 student achievement by delivering targeted, evidence-based intervention to small groups and individual students performing below grade level. Working under the guidance of the Interventionist and in collaboration with classroom teachers, the Interventionist Assistant implements planned intervention lessons, collects progress monitoring data, and helps students build skills and confidence.

This role carries greater instructional responsibility than a Teaching Assistant. The Interventionist Assistant independently leads scheduled intervention groups, tracks student progress, and contributes to school support systems such as MTSS.

Essential Functions:

Instruction & Intervention Support

- Deliver small-group and one-on-one academic interventions using evidence-based practices and the intervention plans designed with the Interventionist and classroom teachers.
- Implement intervention curricula and lesson plans with fidelity, adjusting pacing and supports as directed.
- Reinforce classroom instruction by pre-teaching, re-teaching, and providing guided practice on grade-level standards.
- Provide clear explanations, accurate answers, and timely feedback that moves learning forward.
- Differentiate instruction and supports to meet the varied needs of students within a group.
- Keep students working at the right level of challenge, within each student’s “Zone of Proximal Learning.”
- Ask questions that push student thinking and invite more than one approach to a problem.
- Help students assess their own work against clear criteria and set goals for their learning.
- Prepare intervention materials and resources with the Interventionist or classroom teacher as needed.
Learning Environment
- Create a respectful, inclusive, and encouraging environment that promotes fairness, active listening, and support among students.
- Build positive relationships with students, acknowledging their backgrounds and lives outside the classroom.
- Model and communicate high expectations for effort, participation, and academic performance.
- Recognize and encourage student effort and persistence.
- Maintain structured routines so intervention time is used fully, with minimal loss of instructional time.
- Involve students in carrying out routines and maintaining group norms.
- Manage student behavior during intervention using school-wide expectations and positive supports.
Data-Driven Practice
- Administer progress monitoring and other assessments using valid and reliable tools, and record results accurately and on schedule.
- Use student data, with the Interventionist and teachers, to adjust groupings, skills focus, and instructional approach.
- Track student attendance and participation in intervention for academic monitoring.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation and files for all students receiving intervention services.
- Share observations and data with the Interventionist, teachers, and school teams to support decisions in SAT and MTSS meetings.
- Provide graphed progress monitoring data, as directed, to support Pupil Appraisal in assessing students suspected of disabilities.
Family & Community Engagement
- Support the Interventionist and teachers in communicating with families about intervention services and student progress.
- Share strategies families can use to support learning at home.
- Contribute to written progress reports during reporting periods, as directed.
- Collaborate with staff and families to support both academic and socio-emotional growth.

Other Duties as Assigned
Perform additional tasks assigned by the principal or other supervisors, including but not limited to:
