Role: Lead Software Developer

Location: Richmond Hill, ON (Office-based)

As part of OpenText’s Digital Experience organization, you will help deliver information management solutions that address real-world customer needs. You will also support modernization initiatives for the Opentext’s XDDS fax platform, working across its established codebase while helping move it toward a cloud-native future. You will shape technical direction, collaborate across teams, and bring a development mindset to meaningful challenges.

Your Impact

We are seeking a hands-on Lead Software Developer to lead engineering delivery and the evolution of existing revenue-generating products. You will design, develop, and support Java and Spring Boot microservices running on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), balancing customer commitments and operational stability with modernization and long-term product health. This role combines technical leadership, hands-on development, mentoring, and practical AI experience to improve engineering effectiveness and deliver reliable, secure, and scalable software.

What the Role Offers

As a Lead Software Developer, you will:

- Lead end-to-end delivery for existing product portfolios, from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, and production support; remain actively involved in coding and troubleshooting.
- Design, develop, and maintain Java and Spring Boot microservices on GCP, coordinating feature development, maintenance, and support while enabling incremental modernization without disrupting customer operations.

- Own technical design decisions and drive architectural consistency, secure coding, code reviews, automated testing, API quality, and maintainability across services.
- Prioritize customer commitments and operational improvements; investigate production issues, identify root causes, and improve service reliability, performance, observability, and recovery.

- Mentor developers through design discussions, code reviews, and knowledge sharing; promote engineering practices that improve quality, ownership, and delivery effectiveness.
- Partner with Product Management on roadmap execution and collaborate with QA, cloud operations, and support teams to clarify requirements, assess trade-offs, manage dependencies, and deliver production-ready releases.
- Support legacy XDDS fax platform modernization initiatives, including analyzing, enhancing, and troubleshooting existing C++, Java, Angular, shell, and Perl code, database interactions, and REST and SOAP interfaces, while preserving compatibility and service continuity.
- Port and migrate legacy XDDS components from Solaris to Linux, including adapting C++ code, build processes, shell and Perl scripts, and database connectivity, and validating functional and performance parity.
- Design and build containerized deployments using Docker and Kubernetes for modernized and ported XDDS components and Java microservices, supporting portability, scalability, and consistent environments.
- Strengthen CI/CD, deployment automation, and cloud-operational practices for Java services on GCP, working with partner teams to improve release consistency and reduce delivery risk.
- Apply practical AI experience to engineering workflows and relevant product use cases; validate AI-generated outputs and proposed integrations for correctness, security, privacy, and measurable value.
- Provide technical and business leadership beyond team boundaries, driving multi-team initiatives and aligning technical decisions with client value and longer-term product strategy.
- Build an understanding of the business context, make timely decisions informed by stakeholder input, and adjust direction when an approach no longer serves client needs; prioritize client trust over expediency.

What You Need to Succeed

- 8–12 years of professional software development experience.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and supporting enterprise applications using Java and Spring Boot, including RESTful APIs and microservices.
- Experience deploying, operating, and troubleshooting production services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with an understanding of cloud security, configuration, monitoring, and scalability.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing containerized solutions with Docker and Kubernetes, including images, deployment configuration, scaling, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including architectural decision-making, hands-on implementation, code reviews, mentoring, and cross-functional delivery.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, service integration, data persistence, reliability, and performance troubleshooting.
- Experience with automated testing, Git-based source control, GitLab CI/CD pipelines, and secure software development practices.
- Practical AI experience, including applying AI-assisted development tools or integrating AI capabilities into software solutions, with the ability to explain use cases, evaluate outputs, and manage associated risks.
- Ability to work in a legacy multi-language codebase, including C++, shell and Perl scripts, Java, and Angular front ends, and to support modernization of the legacy XDDS fax platform.
- Experience porting or migrating applications from Solaris (UNIX) to Linux, including resolving platform-specific differences in C++ code, build tooling, scripts, and runtime environments.
- Experience with relational databases, including Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server, and with building, consuming, and troubleshooting REST and SOAP web services and user interfaces.
- Experience maintaining and modernizing established products while supporting customer commitments and production operations.
- Clear communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs and collaborate effectively in an Agile team.

Preferred Qualifications

- Hands-on familiarity with Solaris and Linux administration, system calls, and build environments.
- Experience with GCP container and serverless deployment options such as Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) or Cloud Run.
- Familiarity with GCP data and messaging services, such as Cloud SQL and Pub/Sub, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience integrating generative AI or large language model (LLM) APIs into applications, including evaluation, monitoring, and appropriate data handling; familiarity with Vertex AI is a plus.
- Experience incrementally modernizing established applications into cloud-native services while preserving compatibility and service continuity.

Business Impact

Protects retention revenue, sustains product roadmaps, improves customer satisfaction, and enables strategic growth teams to focus on AI and new market opportunities.
