About the role
Aalo Atomics is building and operating advanced sodium cooled reactors, including a Department of Energy (DOE) authorized reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory site. The Radiological Control Technician, also known in commercial practice as a health physics technician, performs the field radiological control work that implements the radiation protection program under 10 CFR 835 and DOE-STD-1098: surveys, air sampling, job coverage, postings, contamination control, instrument checks, and records. Technicians are qualified under the Aalo Radiological Control Technician Qualification Standard, built on DOE-HDBK-1122; level is assigned on completion of qualification.
What you'll do
- Perform dose rate, contamination, and airborne radioactivity surveys and document them on the Aalo survey form in the system of record.
- Provide job coverage under radiological work permits: pre-job briefing participation, continuous or intermittent coverage, hold points, and permit closeout.
- Set up, verify, and remove radiological postings and boundaries; control entry and exit from radiological areas.
- Operate and source check survey instruments, air samplers, continuous air monitors, and counting equipment; report instrument deficiencies.
- Issue and collect dosimetry, set electronic dosimeter alarms, and operate personnel contamination monitoring equipment.
- Respond to personnel contamination, perform decontamination, and support radiological alarm response.
- Survey material and equipment for release under 10 CFR 835 Appendix D; survey radioactive material and waste for packaging and shipment.
- Support sealed source inventory and leak testing.
- Support emergency response as assigned in the emergency response organization.
- Complete initial qualification and maintain requalification on the two-year cycle, including continuing training.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Fundamentals of mathematics, physics, and chemistry; reading and writing to follow procedures, write permits, and prepare survey maps and reports.
- Qualified Radiological Control Technician under DOE-STD-1098 and DOE-HDBK-1122 within the past two years, or a commercial or Navy nuclear radiological technician qualification, with the ability to complete the Aalo qualification standard. Candidates without prior qualifications may be hired at the entry level and qualified under direct supervision.
- Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a DOE site, to enroll in dosimetry and fitness for duty programs, to wear respiratory protection, and to meet export control requirements for access to controlled technology.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, emergency callout, and on call rotation.
Preferred Qualifications
- NRRPT registration or eligibility.
- Experience at the Idaho National Laboratory or another DOE site under 10 CFR 835.
- Experience with reactor operations, activation products, fresh fuel handling, or liquid metal cooled systems.
- Experience supporting industrial radiography, radioactive material shipping, or air sampling programs.
- DOT hazardous materials training.
Working Conditions
Reactor site, radiological count room, and office environments. Field work requires personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, lifting and carrying of instruments and equipment, and work in outdoor conditions, including winter weather at the DOE site. Primarily day shift. May require shift work, extended hours, weekend coverage, and emergency callout to support reactor operations, outages, and startup.
