About the role

Aalo Atomics is building and operating advanced sodium cooled reactors, including a Department of Energy (DOE) authorized reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory site. The Radiological Controls Supervisor directs the Radiological Control Technicians who implement the radiation protection program under 10 CFR 835 and DOE-STD-1098, Radiological Control. The supervisor runs the field program day to day: job coverage, the survey program, instruments and sources, contamination control, and technician training and qualification, and is the first line of the radiological control organization at the reactor site.

What you'll do

- Supervise Radiological Control Technicians: schedules, job coverage assignments, shift and callout coverage, performance, and development.
- Execute the radiological survey program: dose rate, contamination, and airborne surveys at defined frequencies, with records complete and reviewed.
- Review radiological work permits, conduct and attend pre-job briefings, and provide or assign job coverage with hold points observed.
- Administer the instrument program: daily source checks, calibration scheduling with the calibration provider, and instrument status; serve as sealed source custodian for inventory and leak testing under 10 CFR 835 Subpart M.
- Establish, verify, and remove radiological postings and boundaries under 10 CFR 835 Subparts F and G.
- Maintain contamination control: entry and exit controls, personnel monitoring, material release under 10 CFR 835 Appendix D, and decontamination response.
- Serve as a practical factor evaluator, on the job training signatory, and oral board member for technician qualification under DOE-HDBK-1122 within the Training Manager's program; assign and oversee technician mentors.
- Support the ALARA program: dose estimates, pre job planning, and post job reviews; monitor electronic dosimeter use and setpoints.
- Respond to radiological alarms and events, support the emergency response organization in the rad and safety manager role, and provide initial information for occurrence reporting under NE O 232.2.
- Interface daily with Plant Operations shift management on work in radiological areas and with the Nuclear Facility Manager on radiological conditions.
- Maintain survey, dosimetry, instrument, and source records in the system of record under 10 CFR 835 Subpart H.
- Support DOE, landlord, and third-party assessments and the closure of corrective actions with technical basis and evidence of implementation.

Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or higher in a science or technical field preferred.
- At least ten years of radiological control experience at a DOE site, national laboratory, or commercial nuclear facility, including at least three years supervising or leading Radiological Control Technicians.
- Qualified Radiological Control Technician under DOE-STD-1098 and DOE-HDBK-1122, or an equivalent commercial or Navy nuclear qualification with the ability to complete the Aalo qualification standard.
- Working knowledge of 10 CFR 835, DOE-STD-1098, and DOE-HDBK-1122.
- Ability to qualify as a supervisor under DOE-STD-1098 article 646, including an oral examination board, within the period set by the program.
- Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a DOE site, to enroll in dosimetry and fitness for duty programs, to wear respiratory protection, and to meet export control requirements for access to controlled technology.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, emergency callout, and on call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

- National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) registration.
- Experience at the Idaho National Laboratory or another DOE site under 10 CFR 835.
- Experience with reactor operations, activation products, or liquid metal cooled systems.
- Experience qualifying technicians as an evaluator or board member.
- Experience standing up a field radiological control program at a new facility.
