Grimshaw is a global architecture and design studio of ideas and invention, driven by a desire to connect people to each other and the world around us. We recognize the urgency of the challenges that face our planet, and our duty to deliver architecture and design best suited for a flourishing future. Our studios are founded on analysis and exploration. We relish the challenges inherent across a wide range of work, engaging our expertise and agility to deliver lasting, meaningful design that brings value and joy to clients and users. At Grimshaw, we encourage creativity, collaboration and innovation. We want our staff to be fulfilled by their time with us as we know the key to our continuing success is working with and engaging the most talented people we can find.

JOB SUMMARY

Grimshaw is seeking highly skilled Senior Architects and project leaders experienced in aviation to grow our North American practice. You will help lead the design and delivery of large, complex airport projects. As a key member of the team, you will demonstrate exceptional communication skills, leadership and professionalism. Collaboration, reliability and accountability for meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work are paramount.

Depending on your experience, you may lead the entirety of a project or contribute as a key lead within a larger team, across all phases from concept through construction administration. This is an expression of interest rather than a current opening. Opportunities will be confirmed as new projects are confirmed. Candidates who register their interest will be given priority consideration as roles become available. Please submit work samples/a portfolio alongside your latest CV.

MAJOR TASKS

- Lead or contribute to aviation projects from conceptual design through construction administration, under the direction of project leaders and partners.
- Generate creative design solutions and help resolve design and technical challenges.
- Work as part of a team, including with partner firms, coordinating your work with other design and technical leads.
- Engage and coordinate with engineering and specialist consultants, aviation planners and clients.
- Design for the demands of airports: heavy use, long service life, and durable, maintainable detailing.
- Champion design excellence and sustainability, including net-zero carbon goals.
- Mentor and develop junior staff on your projects and in the studio.
- Contribute to the life of the studio, studio-wide initiatives, our design and sustainability culture, and the wider social and wellness culture at Grimshaw.
- Travel periodically as required.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

We also welcome experience from related sectors, such as rail and metro stations, transit interchanges, large-span and civic buildings, sports and cultural venues, and infrastructure, as well as specialist experience in complex facades or high-traffic public interiors.

- Master’s degree or equivalent 5-year professional degree in architecture from an accredited school required.
- Minimum of 10 years of related professional experience, 5 of those years within aviation or closely related sectors.
- Professional licensure or registration preferred.
- Strong experience in early-stage conceptual design, including master planning, design studies and competitions, with the ability to develop a compelling concept and carry it into design development.
- Experience in aviation planning and design highly prioritized, across terminals, airside or landside facilities.
- Experience leading a project, a key project package, or a specialist discipline such as planning, facades, interiors or technical delivery.
- Proven experience coordinating with engineers and specialist consultants on large, complex projects.
- Experience working collaboratively in mid- to large-sized teams, including with partner firms.
- Proficiency in Revit and Rhino is essential. Working knowledge of Grasshopper useful.
- Experience designing LEED-certified and net-zero carbon projects.
- Strong time management and prioritization, and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate clear design ideas and direction quickly.
- Aviation sector experience supporting business development, such as pursuits and proposals, client and partner relationships, and market research, is a plus.
