About this role

The Director, Business Intelligence is the senior leader accountable for BI end to end: the quality and consistency of our data, the governance behind our metrics, how easily the business can use data on its own, and how we use analytics and AI to improve decisions and how work gets done. The Director also makes the trusted data foundation that lets every team at Topgolf use AI in its own work with confidence. The Director leads the BI team of product owners and data engineers (~20 headcounts), partners with commercial, operations, finance, and venue leaders, and represents analytics in Technology’s planning and architecture decisions. The role reports to the VP of Finance and BI and serves the whole company, not Finance alone.

What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months

- Executives, Finance, and venue leaders work from one set of certified metrics, and the same number appears no matter who pulls it.

- Every certified metric has a named owner, and conflicting reports and calculations are retired, with the count published

- Business users answer their routine questions without a ticket, and self-service adoption grows each quarter

- Venue leaders have a short set of operational views they trust and use during a shift.

- AI assistants answer business questions from certified metrics, respect data access rules, and have a clear process for review and correction when they are wrong.

- Develop advanced forecasting capabilities leveraging data science to improve visibility into future revenue, demand and business performance.

Team Leadership

- Lead, coach, and develop the BI team of product owners and reporting engineers; set priorities, own delivery speed and predictability, and build the next layer of leaders.

- Coach product owners in requirements gathering, backlog management, acceptance criteria, and stakeholder communication, including how to say no well.

- Set and enforce team standards for SQL, data modeling, version control, code review, testing, documentation, and dashboard design.

- Ensure a disciplined delivery cadence (intake, prioritization, release planning, and review) that balances executive requests, roadmap commitments, and technical debt.

- Set the standard for how the team uses AI in its daily work, expect every team member to use it to deliver faster and at higher quality, and require human review of what AI produces.

Data Quality & Governance

- Data quality and usability: Establish a data quality framework and own curated, well-documented models that are accurate, accessible, and easy for business users to find and use.

- Single source of truth: Make these models the authoritative source for core business metrics, require end-to-end testing of current and new metrics, and retire conflicting reports and calculations.

- Data and reporting governance: Define the process for new metrics and definitions, including ownership, approvals, calculation logic, validation, documentation, and change control.

- Data committee: Chair a small governance group that reviews and approves reporting for broad audiences, and partner with Security and Compliance on access, PII, consent, retention, and privacy requirements.

- AI governance: Make certified metrics the foundation for AI-enabled analytics so assistants and automated tools give answers the business can trust. Define what data AI tools can access, how their answers are validated, and how errors are reported and corrected.

- Guest 360: Continually connect visitation, spend, membership, segment, channel, promotions, frequency, and occasion across POS, reservations, loyalty, marketing, labor, finance, and survey systems into a single, trusted view of the guest and the venue, within privacy requirements.

Product Roadmap & Self-Service

- Own the BI product roadmap across corporate functions and venue operations, set priorities on enterprise value rather than on any single function’s request, and make the trade-off calls when demand exceeds capacity.

- Serve two audiences: corporate stakeholders who need depth and cross-venue comparison, and venue leaders who need a few fast, unambiguous operational views they can act on during a shift, such as bay utilization, labor against demand, food and beverage, and event performance.

- Build a self-service environment so business users can create their own reporting, including asking questions in plain language and getting answers from certified data. Shift the team from producing reports on requests to enabling others, measure adoption, and retire low-usage assets.

- Executive and Finance reporting: Own the executive scorecard and the metrics reported to leadership and the board and reconcile them with Finance at each close so there is one agreed number.

Technology Partnership & Platform

- Build durable relationships with Data Engineering, Application Development, Product, Infrastructure, and Security, and represent reporting in their planning and design forums.

- Join architecture and design reviews, intake for new systems and integrations, and vendor selection early, so data access, event capture, and reporting requirements are defined before build rather than retrofitted.

- Partner with Data Engineering on pipeline reliability, data freshness, query performance, warehouse sizing, and cost.

- Agree and document with Data Engineering and the teams that ingest data from across the company who owns each stage from source to certified metric; BI owns the curated, business-facing models and the freshness standards reporting requires.

- Set a clear point of view on how many data platforms and reporting tools the company needs, and lead consolidation where it lowers cost and confusion.

- Build and work with any data science and advanced analytics teams to define where forecasting, segmentation, and modeling work lives, and how their outputs are governed and published. Leverage MCP-connected data sources and LLM-enabled analytics.

- Establish data contracts and change-notification expectations with upstream system owners so schema and vendor changes don’t silently break reporting.

- Own the reporting and analytics platform, including the access controls that determine what each user can see, ensuring it is run to defined standards for reliability, security, and capacity.

Budget, Vendor & Cost Management

- Own the annual BI budget for software, licensing, cloud consumption, and professional services; build the plan, defend it in the budget cycle, and manage to it through the year.

- Hold the team accountable for validating monthly vendor charges against contracted rates and expected consumption and resolve material discrepancies with vendors.

- Drive cost efficiency through query optimization, capacity right-sizing, license true-ups, and retirement of unused tools and assets.

- Lead vendor renewals and negotiations using usage data and business justification, partnering with Procurement and Legal.

Required Qualifications

- 10+ years in business intelligence, analytics, or analytics engineering, including 5+ years leading teams

- Track record of fixing data trust issues, including retiring conflicting reports, and establishing governance, self-service, and adoption programs that last.

- Experience managing external consulting or systems-integration partners on data or BI programs.

- Credibility with senior leaders in Finance and venue operations and proven ability to influence without authority across business and technology teams.

- Deep technical credibility in enterprise BI and cloud data warehouse platforms, SQL, and dimensional modeling, with the judgment to evaluate and adopt new platforms as the business changes.

- Experience owning a significant budget, including vendor management and forecasting consumption-based cloud spend.

- Experience leading adoption of AI-enabled analytics on governed enterprise data, including personal daily use of AI and measurable improvement in decisions or productivity.

- Experience in a multi-unit, shift-based business such as restaurant, hospitality, entertainment, or retail, with working knowledge of venue-level P&L, labor, and guest analytics.

- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience building a guest or customer 360 view and enterprise data governance forums.

- Familiarity with FinOps and software capitalization (ASC 350-40 / ASU 2018-15).
