Job Title: Travel Construction Superintendent Job Description
This traveling Construction Superintendent role leads field operations for ground-up federal and military construction projects across the Northeast. The first assignment is a new $19M logistics warehouse at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, currently entering foundation preparation. The superintendent actively manages all on-site activities, driving subcontractors, schedules, safety, and quality to ensure projects finish on time and in full compliance with federal standards. After the initial 67 month project, the superintendent transitions to the next military base project within the region, offering a long-term, travel-focused career path.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the on-site authority for all construction activities, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and federal requirements.
- Lead daily field operations for ground-up construction, including sitework, foundations, structural systems, MEP integration, and project closeout.
- Direct, coordinate, and hold subcontractors accountable for productivity, sequencing, workmanship, and adherence to project plans and specifications.
- Actively drive project schedules by maintaining and updating the construction schedule, anticipating potential delays, and implementing corrective actions to keep the project on track.
- Enforce quality assurance standards by ensuring all work complies with plans, specifications, submittals, and federal quality control requirements.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture on site in accordance with OSHA regulations and military base safety protocols.
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with base personnel, inspectors, and internal project teams to resolve issues and keep stakeholders informed.
- Maintain thorough documentation, including daily logs, progress photos, RFIs, and other field reports to provide accurate records of project progress and issues.
- Take proactive ownership of field operations by identifying problems early, proposing solutions, and driving decisions without waiting for direction.
- Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, inspections, and turnover documentation, to ensure a smooth and compliant project completion.
Essential Skills
- At least 7 years of ground-up construction experience, ideally on federal, military, or industrial projects.
- Demonstrated ability to lead subcontractors, push schedules, and take full ownership of field operations.
- Hands-on experience managing sitework, foundations, structural systems, and full-building delivery.
- Strong understanding of federal construction standards, including quality control and safety protocols.
- Proficiency with construction management processes and tools, including field documentation and reporting.
- Experience working with or for a general contractor on ground-up projects.
- Subcontractor management skills, including coordination, performance oversight, and conflict resolution.
- Familiarity with Procore or similar construction management software.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.
- Ability and willingness to travel and live on-site for extended project durations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience delivering projects on active military bases or other secure federal facilities.
- Background in logistics, warehouse, or industrial-type construction projects.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with base personnel, inspectors, and project teams.
- Proactive, assertive leadership style with the confidence to make decisions and drive outcomes in the field.
- Interest in a long-term, travel-based superintendent role with ongoing assignments at military bases across the Northeast.
Work Environment
This role is fully site-based at military installations, with the first project located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. The superintendent works in a field construction environment overseeing ground-up building activities, including sitework, foundations, structural work, and MEP installations. The position requires regular presence outdoors and in active construction zones, with exposure to varying weather conditions, heavy equipment, and ongoing trades work. Work hours typically align with standard construction schedules, with flexibility required to address critical activities, inspections, or schedule-driven milestones. The role involves significant travel and extended stays near project sites, as each assignment requires living on or near the base for the duration of the project. Safety is a core focus, with strict adherence to OSHA and military base safety standards, and the superintendent is expected to model and enforce safe work practices at all times.
