About this role

Finance Assistant

Edinburgh

Wordsmith

Wordsmith is building the legal operations platform for in-house teams, and we’re growing fast.

We believe in-house legal is becoming one of the most important functions in the AI era. Every business is moving faster, but legal work is still too often scattered across inboxes, chats, documents and disconnected systems.

Wordsmith brings that work into one system. Requests come in from across the business, AI agents handle the routine, lawyers stay in control where judgment matters, and every step is captured as work happens.

We’re built for in-house legal, not law firms. Our goal is to help legal teams move faster, reduce unnecessary external counsel spend, and become a function the business can run with.

More than 500 companies use Wordsmith. We’ve raised over $80m from leading investors, and we’re building one of the defining companies in legal AI — from our office in Edinburgh.

Why this role is different

You won’t be joining a big, process-heavy finance function. You’ll be one of the first Finance hires, working on a brand new, AI-native ERP system (Rillet) with the freedom to actually improve how things are done — not just keep the lights on.

If you want real exposure to the business, a seat close to the founders and leadership team, and the chance to shape processes rather than inherit them, this is that seat.

The Role

As Finance Assistant, you’ll own the day-to-day mechanics that keep Wordsmith’s finances running — cash, invoicing, collections, payables and expenses — and you’ll have the tools and the licence to automate as much of it as possible.

What you'll do

- Complete daily cash reconciliation across our accounts
- Set up customer contracts in our ERP (Rillet) and issue invoices
- Chase accounts receivable to keep debtor days down
- Own all accounts payable activity, including uploading bills and creating payment runs
- Help with month end balance sheet reconciliations
- Help administer our travel and expense system
- Pick up other finance tasks as they come up — in a small team, that’s part of the job

Who you might be

We’re not looking for someone who wants a narrow, ticket-based role. You might be:

- Newly qualified, or qualified by experience, and ready to take real ownership from day one
- 1–2 years post-qualified and looking for broader exposure than a larger finance function gives you
- Someone who’s used to (or excited about) using modern tools and automation rather than doing everything by hand

What matters most is being highly motivated and genuinely keen to get stuck in quickly — we’ll help you grow into the rest.

What we're looking for

- Newly qualified, 1–2 years PQE, or qualified by experience
- Comfortable owning process end-to-end — cash, invoicing, AR, AP and expenses
- Happy working in-office five days a week in central Edinburgh
- Curious about tech and automation, and keen to use it to improve how finance runs
- Highly organised, with the judgement to know when something needs chasing

How we work

This role is on-site five days a week, from our office in central Edinburgh — a short walk from both Waverley and Haymarket. You’ll sit inside a small finance team, which means direct exposure to the wider business rather than being several layers removed from it.

It’s a fast-moving environment with light process and a genuine bias toward using technology to remove manual work, not add to it.

What you can expect

- Real ownership over core finance processes from day one
- Hands-on experience with a brand new, AI-native ERP system (Rillet)
- Close exposure to a small finance team and the wider business
- The freedom to use an extensive suite of tech tools to improve and automate how things are done

Why Wordsmith

We’re a fast-moving, Edinburgh-based Legal AI company that’s just raised over $80m. Joining now means joining early enough to shape how our finance function is built — with modern tools, real ownership, and a team that wants to do things properly rather than just keep pace.
