About this role

The Aeromechanics Office conducts research for aeromechanics technology solutions that will enable the development of vertical flight vehicles, both piloted and uninhabited, providing unlimited mobility in three dimensions for terrestrial and planetary science applications. Innovative and revolutionary ideas for vertical-flight vehicle technologies are developed, enhanced, analyzed, demonstrated, and assessed using advanced modeling, ground-based facilities, simulation, and flight as appropriate.

This project provides an opportunity for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in rotorcraft flight dynamics and controls to gain experience working on problems related to vertical flight vehicle modeling and analysis.
The intern will contribute to ongoing research efforts involving the development, verification, and application of tools used to evaluate rotorcraft stability and control characteristics. Potential project areas include flight dynamics modeling, control system analysis, and simulation-based studies. This research contributes to the development of modeling and simulation tools needed to support future generations of vertical flight vehicles for terrestrial and planetary missions. The project scope and application area will ultimately be determined by project needs, with opportunities to tailor the work to the student’s experience and interests.
Expected opportunity outcome (i.e. research, final report, poster presentation, etc.): At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will prepare a final report and present their final work in a formal office-wide presentation and/or participate in a center-wide poster day. The results of the research, if appropriate and documented, can be considered for abstract submittal to a national conference in the appropriate subject area for publication.
Applicants should be pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Coursework in aircraft and/or rotorcraft flight dynamics and control systems is preferred. An interest in flight dynamics, aircraft controls, vehicle modeling and simulation, or rotorcraft dynamics is highly desirable. Experience using MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python for engineering analysis, modeling, or simulation is beneficial but not required.
