We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of production tooling for a Lighting Sources platform. In this role, you partner closely with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams to design, validate, and implement tooling solutions that enable efficient, high-quality production operations. You focus primarily on mechanical assembly tooling and electro-mechanical test fixtures used in a factory environment, taking designs from initial concept through full production implementation.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop production tooling from initial concept through production implementation, ensuring robust performance and manufacturability.
- Create mechanical assembly tooling and electro-mechanical test fixtures that support efficient and high-quality factory operations.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and supporting documentation for tooling and fixtures.
- Perform material selection, tolerance analysis, and design reviews to ensure reliable, cost-effective, and high-quality designs.
- Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing engineers to align tooling designs with product and process requirements.
- Build prototypes and test setups to validate designs and verify performance against specifications.
- Support tooling introduction into manufacturing facilities, including validation activities and troubleshooting of issues during ramp-up and ongoing production.
- Apply knowledge of plastics, fasteners, adhesives, sheet metal, and mechanical assembly design to create robust and repeatable tooling solutions.
- Use Creo or equivalent 3D CAD tools, along with associated data management systems, to manage design files and documentation.
- Travel periodically to manufacturing sites to support tooling deployment, validation, and continuous improvement activities.
Essential Skills
- Associate degree in a related technical field.
- Recent, relevant experience as an individual contributor in mechanical design (5+ years).
- Proficiency with Creo or equivalent 3D CAD software for 3D mechanical design.
- Experience with sheet metal design and injection molded plastics.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including plastics, fasteners, adhesives, and mechanical assembly design.
- Ability to take designs from concept through production, including design validation and implementation.
- Experience creating detailed engineering drawings and performing tolerance analysis using GD&T.
- Hands-on experience building prototypes and developing test fixtures.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing engineers.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 12% to Austin, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico to support manufacturing activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Expertise with Creo and/or Windchill for design and product data management.
- Experience designing mechanical assembly tooling specifically for production environments.
- Background in consumer electronics manufacturing and related processes.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical test fixtures used in factory settings.
- Strong attention to detail in documentation, design reviews, and tolerance analysis.
- Ability to work independently as a hands-on individual contributor while collaborating within cross-functional teams.
