Job Title: Construction Inspector Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Construction Inspector to oversee the construction and installation of water, wastewater, and utility infrastructure projects. This role ensures contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, utility standards, permits, and applicable industry regulations throughout all phases of construction.
Responsibilities
- Independently inspect construction activities involving water mains, gravity sanitary sewer mains, sewer force mains, water and sewer service laterals, utility rehabilitation, and capital improvement projects.
- Verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, utility standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor contractor work for quality, schedule adherence, contract compliance, permits compliance, and workmanship.
- Witness and document required acceptance testing.
- Verify contractor quality control procedures are being followed.
- Review quality control plans and testing documentation.
- Confirm field and laboratory testing requirements are being met.
- Audit contractor testing records and quality documentation.
- Conduct independent quality assurance inspections to validate compliance.
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports documenting work completed, labor, equipment, testing activities, and project progress.
- Maintain inspection logs, photographs, field measurements, and project records.
- Identify non-conforming work and document deficiencies.
- Track corrective actions through resolution.
- Review material certifications, submittals, and shop drawings before installation.
- Review and verify as-built drawings for completeness and accuracy.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings.
- Attend project progress meetings and provide status updates.
- Work closely with contractors, consultants, utility representatives, and project stakeholders.
- Support project closeout activities, punch-list completion, and final acceptance.
- Monitor sewer bypass operations, traffic control, and environmental compliance activities.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with applicable construction standards.
- Promote a safe work environment and identify potential risks in the field.
Essential Skills
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 3+ years of construction inspection, utility construction, civil infrastructure, or related field experience.
- Experience with water, wastewater, underground utility, or municipal infrastructure projects.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, and technical documents.
- Strong understanding of utility construction methods, materials, and installation practices.
- Experience preparing inspection reports and maintaining project documentation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word.
- Experience with reporting, report writing, and analysis.
- Knowledge of pipe fitting, pipeline installation, pipeline inspection, pipe cutting, and fusing.
Work Environment
The construction inspector will be on the job site 100% of the time in Alexandria. They need to be present when the contractors are working to oversee their work and ensure it is completed in accordance with drawings and specifications. The role involves performing basic inspecting responsibilities and daily coordination with project teams.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fairfax, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
