Job Title: Electrical Technician Job Description
The Electrical Engineering Technician role supports the electrical engineering team by enhancing the quality and accuracy of electrical documentation and designs. This position is focused on reviewing drawings, validating bills of materials, updating technical documentation, and verifying electrical systems during panel assembly and equipment checkout. This is a highly detail-oriented position working closely with engineers, although it does not involve making final design decisions.
Responsibilities
- Follow established electrical and workplace safety procedures during panel building, machine assembly, and system checkout activities.
- Review bills of materials for accuracy, completeness, and system compatibility before project release.
- Verify that device tags, cable identifiers, schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs are consistent and properly cross-referenced.
- Identify documentation errors, missing components, or inconsistencies and collaborate with engineers to resolve issues.
- Create and revise electrical drawings, panel layouts, and I/O lists based on engineer direction and design reviews.
- Inspect as-built wiring, panel construction, and I/O implementations to ensure they match engineering documentation.
- Help maintain and improve drafting standards, documentation templates, and engineering processes.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and manufacturing teams regarding documentation requirements, project status, and timelines.
Essential Skills
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to review large technical document packages and identify errors.
- Typically 0-4+ years of experience in electrical drafting, technical documentation, panel construction, machine building, or a similar technical environment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and bills of materials.
- Experience with AutoCAD and exposure to AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar drafting software.
- Familiarity with industrial electrical standards such as NFPA 79, NEC, and UL 508A.
- Understanding of PLC-based control systems, including I/O, drives, HMIs, sensors, and industrial networks.
- Knowledge of electrical panel assembly and machine wiring practices.
- Experience with revision control and document management platforms such as SharePoint, Vault, or similar systems.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills when working with cross-functional teams and customers.
- Ability to travel occasionally within the U.S. (up to 10%).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- An associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field is helpful but not required.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or demonstrated drafting aptitude with training provided.
- Familiarity with PLCs.
- Opportunity to grow into the controls, electrical, and robotics departments.
Work Environment
The work environment involves occasional travel within the U.S. (up to 10%) and core working hours between 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
