Civil Project Engineer

Job Title: Civil Project Engineer Job Description This Civil Project Engineer role supports large community developments, residential land development, and commercial projects throughout the Puget Sound area. The position focuses on civil design engineering for land development, including site layout, grading, stormwater, hydrology, and utilities. The ideal candidate brings 3–8 years of relevant experience, holds an EIT license, and is interested in growing into project management responsibilities within a collaborative consulting environment. Responsibilities

- Lead and support civil engineering design for residential land development, commercial projects, and large community developments in the Puget Sound area.
- Develop site layouts, grading plans, and civil site designs that meet project requirements and local regulations.
- Design stormwater systems, including drainage, stormwater management facilities, and related infrastructure in accordance with Washington state requirements.
- Perform hydrology modeling using tools such as Western Washington Hydrology Modeling (WWHM) to support stormwater design and compliance.
- Design utilities, including wastewater and other civil infrastructure components for site development projects.
- Produce detailed civil engineering drawings and plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D, ensuring accuracy and consistency across projects.
- Collaborate closely with survey teams and engineering colleagues to integrate survey data into civil site and land development designs.
- Support site development and residential subdivision projects from concept through design, permitting, and construction support as needed.
- Prepare site plans and development documents that align with local codes, standards, and stormwater regulations in Washington.
- Apply civil engineering principles to create efficient, cost-effective, and constructible designs for land development projects.
- Work toward assuming project management responsibilities, including coordinating project tasks, communicating with internal stakeholders, and helping to manage schedules and deliverables.
- Contribute to quality control and quality assurance processes for civil engineering design work.
- Participate in a collaborative team environment, sharing knowledge and supporting continuous improvement of design standards and practices.

Essential Skills

- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license highly desired.
- 3–8 years of experience supporting civil design engineering specifically for land development.
- 5+ years of civil engineering and design experience, including land development projects.
- Strong knowledge of site layout, grading, stormwater, and utilities design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil engineering design and drafting.
- Experience with grading design and civil site design for residential subdivisions and site development.
- Local experience in Washington with a strong understanding of state and local stormwater requirements.
- Experience designing utilities, including wastewater systems and related civil infrastructure.
- Ability to demonstrate strong experience in at least two of the following areas: civil engineering, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, design, site development, residential subdivision, site layout, drainage, site plan development, wastewater, civil site design, and stormwater.
- Interest in pursuing project management responsibilities as part of long-term career goals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience with Western Washington Hydrology Modeling (WWHM) or similar hydrology modeling tools.
- Experience in civil engineering design for Puget Sound area projects.
- Experience working on projects related to utilities and energy infrastructure is beneficial.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality design documents.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a smaller firm environment with close coordination between survey and engineering teams.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues and contribute to project coordination.
- Desire for long-term growth, including ownership opportunities in the future.
- Ability to adapt to evolving project needs and support multiple projects concurrently.

Work Environment This role is based in an office in Federal Way, Washington, within a smaller civil consulting firm that maintains survey teams in the northern region and an engineering team in Federal Way. The environment is friendly and casual, with an emphasis on collaboration and team-based problem solving. The firm is well funded and supports a significant portion of its work in the Puget Sound area, offering stable project pipelines and strong growth potential. The position primarily involves working on-site in the Federal Way office to support close collaboration with the engineering team, with some flexibility for hybrid work and the potential to work up to two days per week from home over time. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Federal Way, WA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $43.27 - $62.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
