Job Title: Engineering Technician Job Description The Engineering Technician supports Manufacturing and Process Engineers in a fast-paced, highly automated production environment. This role focuses on maintaining and improving manufacturing processes, providing hands-on technical support for CNC machining operations, robotic systems, tooling, and process recovery. The Engineering Technician troubleshoots production issues on the shop floor, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and helps optimize cycle times, reduce scrap, and improve overall equipment effectiveness. This position is an excellent development opportunity and serves as a pipeline into Process Engineering, offering broad exposure to machining process development in a high-volume, precision machining and assembly setting. Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day manufacturing activities and assist in recovering manufacturing processes following downtime, quality concerns, or equipment issues.
- Troubleshoot production problems related to machining, tooling, automation, fixturing, and overall process performance.
- Assist engineers in optimizing cycle times, reducing scrap, and improving overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Monitor manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for efficiency, quality, and productivity improvements.
- Assist with updates to documentation, including work instructions, setup sheets, and process records.
- Troubleshoot CNC machining issues involving lathes, mills, and automated machining centers.
- Assist operators with setup challenges, offsets, tooling adjustments, and machining-related concerns.
- Analyze machining performance and recommend corrective actions to improve productivity and quality.
- Work with production teams to minimize downtime and maintain required output levels.
- Assist in troubleshooting robotic cells and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Collaborate with Controls/Automation and Maintenance teams to resolve equipment and automation issues.
- Coordinate tooling replacement, repair, and maintenance activities to support continuous production.
- Assist with fixture troubleshooting and process adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and stability.
- Serve as a technical resource for production operators and team leaders on machining, tooling, and process questions.
- Work closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Process Engineers, Tooling personnel, Maintenance Technicians, and Production Operators to support production goals.
- Provide real-time floor support to keep production running efficiently and safely.
- Escalate recurring concerns and assist in implementing permanent corrective actions.
- Participate in continuous improvement events and projects focused on process optimization and waste reduction.
- Support root cause analysis activities using structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Collect and analyze production data to support engineering decisions and process improvements.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience in a machining and manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of CNC machining processes and tooling.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment and production processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T and process documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical, hands-on problem-solving skills.
- Experience working within an automotive manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge of machining principles, including feeds, speeds, tooling selection, and work holding methods.
- Experience with FANUC robotics and automated manufacturing systems.
- Experience contributing to lean manufacturing initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
- Interest in developing into a Process Engineering role and growing within a precision machining environment.
Work Environment The Engineering Technician works in a world-class precision machining and assembly environment focused on high-volume automated processes, primarily serving automotive customers. The role is heavily floor-based and hands-on, often requiring rapid response to production issues and active involvement in troubleshooting and 'firefighting' on the shop floor. The technician collaborates closely with Manufacturing and Process Engineers, Tooling personnel, Maintenance Technicians, Production Operators, Quality Engineers, Program Managers, Automation Engineers, and Operations staff. The facility operates multiple shifts, with one Engineering Technician needed for each of the following shifts: 1st shift (7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.), 2nd shift (3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.), and 3rd shift (11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.). The typical workweek ranges from approximately 45 to 50 hours. The environment features CNC lathes, mills, automated machining centers, robotic cells, and other automated manufacturing equipment. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Troy, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $32.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
