About this role

Senior Mechanical & Hydraulic Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical & Hydraulic Engineer to support the design, development, maintenance, testing, commissioning, and continuous improvement of complex industrial equipment and automated systems. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of mechanical and hydraulic subsystems throughout the entire product lifecycle, from concept development and detailed design through manufacturing support, field deployment, and ongoing product enhancement. The position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys a blend of design work, hands-on problem solving, testing, commissioning, and collaboration with technicians and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and improve mechanical and hydraulic subsystems for complex industrial machinery and engineered equipment.
- Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD platforms such as Inventor, Creo, or NX.
- Generate, review, and manage detailed engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support manufacturing and assembly.
- Design, analyze, and optimize hydraulic power, motion, and control systems for demanding operating environments.
- Lead projects through the full development lifecycle, from concept and design through manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and deployment.
- Support manufacturing, assembly, and integration activities by collaborating closely with technicians and production personnel.
- Participate in equipment testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning, identifying and resolving mechanical and hydraulic issues.
- Provide technical support for deployed equipment, including investigation and resolution of field-related performance challenges.
- Contribute to sustaining engineering initiatives focused on reliability improvements, maintainability, performance enhancements, and product support.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and systems engineering professionals.
- Ensure designs meet required standards for fit, tolerance, manufacturability, reliability, and performance.
- Support new product development activities, including requirements definition, concept development, prototyping, and validation.
- Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve complex engineering challenges involving mechanisms, hydraulics, controls interactions, and machine operation.
- Assist with installation, commissioning, calibration, and verification activities for new systems and equipment.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to a collaborative, knowledge-sharing engineering environment.

Essential Skills

- Minimum of 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience supporting heavy industrial equipment, machinery, OEM products, or complex engineered systems.
- Strong practical experience with hydraulic power and motion systems, including hydraulic circuit design and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software such as Inventor, Creo, NX, or similar platforms.
- Experience working with large electromechanical equipment, mobile equipment, industrial machinery, or automated systems.
- Strong background in machine design, moving mechanisms, and integration of mechanical systems with controls and automation.
- Experience developing products from concept through manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and field deployment.
- Ability to generate and review engineering drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials.
- Experience supporting shop-floor manufacturing, assembly, and integration activities.
- Strong understanding of fits, tolerances, geometric dimensioning, and precision mechanical design practices.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technicians, manufacturing teams, and engineers.
- Comfortable working primarily on-site and engaging directly with manufacturing and field operations.

Preferred Qualifications

- 10+ years of experience designing and supporting heavy equipment, industrial machinery, automation systems, robotics, energy systems, or complex engineered products.
- Experience within industries such as heavy equipment, industrial automation, robotics, marine systems, energy, mining, offshore operations, or specialized machinery manufacturing.
- Familiarity with hydraulic control systems, proportional control valves, actuators, and motion control applications.
- Understanding of controls integration, sensors, instrumentation, and machine feedback systems.
- Experience with AutoCAD, DraftSight, or similar 2D drafting software.
- Previous involvement in commissioning, startup, installation, and field support of large-scale equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting customer, operator, or field-related equipment issues.
- Strong systems-level engineering mindset with the ability to evaluate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and controls interactions.
- Proven ability to work independently while taking ownership of technical solutions and project outcomes.
- Collaborative approach with a willingness to support technicians, production personnel, and cross-functional teams.
- Experience working within agile, fast-paced engineering organizations where responsibilities are broad and highly visible.

Work Environment

This role is primarily on-site within a collaborative engineering and manufacturing environment, with occasional flexibility for remote work when operational requirements permit. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and production personnel, supporting activities ranging from product development and sustaining engineering to testing, commissioning, and field support. The position offers exposure to the complete product lifecycle and requires active participation in solving practical manufacturing, integration, and operational challenges. The environment encourages innovation, teamwork, technical ownership, and continuous improvement while providing opportunities for professional growth and meaningful impact on complex engineering projects.
