CMM Programmer

Job Description: CMM Programmer / Technician The CMM Programmer / Technician is responsible for inspecting incoming and outgoing products and materials to ensure they meet engineering specifications, using a variety of test and measuring equipment. This role focuses on programming and operating coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to support quality control, statistical process control, capability studies, and measurement system analysis for key characteristics specified on customer drawings and specifications. Responsibilities

- Program and operate coordinate measuring machines (CMM) using CMM Manager software, with the ability to work with PC-DMIS or other CMM programming platforms as needed.
- Create and write CMM programs from scratch, developing approximately 4–5 new programs per day for new parts.
- Program CMMs directly from blueprints and/or CAD models, ensuring accurate interpretation of engineering requirements and customer specifications.
- Perform visual and dimensional inspection of purchased parts, tight-tolerance machined, fabricated, and stamped components, assemblies, and materials using calibrated measurement equipment.
- Conduct first article inspections (FAI) and complete FAI layouts for new and revised parts and components.
- Prepare complete FAI reports with all required dimensions and submit them to the PPAP lead for data entry and verification.
- Ensure that PPAP and FAI reports meet all customer and internal quality requirements.
- Generate regular inspection reports (History Cards) as required to document product quality and inspection results.
- Initiate nonconformance reports (NCs) when parts or materials do not meet specified requirements.
- Support statistical process controls, capability studies, and measurement system analyses (MSA) for key characteristics identified on customer prints and specifications.
- Collaborate with quality and production teams to resolve inspection issues and support continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

Essential Skills

- At least 2 years of hands-on CMM programming experience.
- Proficiency in programming and operating CMMs, including experience with PC-DMIS and/or CMM Manager software.
- Ability to create CMM programs from scratch and develop multiple new programs daily for new parts.
- Strong ability to program from engineering blueprints and CAD models.
- Solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with visual and dimensional inspection of machined, fabricated, stamped parts, and assemblies.
- Proficient blueprint reading skills and familiarity with engineering drawings.
- Experience using calibrated inspection tools and measuring equipment.
- Experience as a CMM Programmer, CMM Technician, or Quality Technician in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience with alternative CMM programming platforms such as Zeiss / Calypso, CMM Manager, or similar systems.
- Knowledge of inspection processes related to PPAP and first article inspection requirements.
- Ability to complete detailed inspection and FAI reports with high accuracy and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with statistical process control, capability studies, and measurement system analysis (MSA).
- Comfort working with CAD data and translating it into effective measurement programs.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and document nonconformances.
- Effective communication skills for working with quality, engineering, and production teams.
- Organized and detail-oriented approach to managing multiple inspection tasks and programs each day.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Libertyville, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $36.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
