Job Title: Pharmacy Technician Job Description
This role is based in a highly automated central fill pharmacy that packages and distributes medications to retail pharmacies across Indiana and Minnesota. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will manually fill prescriptions, replenish medications for automated dispensing stations, package medications, stock packages, and perform other related tasks in a fast-paced production environment that supports retail locations rather than serving patients directly.
Responsibilities
- Maintain pharmacy systems and technology, including inventory systems and automated medication counting machines, by preparing informational records and reports to ensure accurate data and compliance with policies and regulations.
- Monitor inventory levels and pharmaceutical expiration dates, calibrate automated machines, apply correct settings for pills and capsules to minimize breakage, ensure continuous replenishment of medications using computer and scanner systems, and troubleshoot pill cell issues such as jamming throughout production.
- Maintain and track medication inventory by sorting, placing, and storing freight in appropriate locations; restocking and replenishing medications; reporting low stock levels; and ensuring stock rotation on a first-in, first-out basis to support shrinkage control.
- Perform inventory cycle counts and assist with physical inventory counts, create reports using inventory information systems, and monitor prescription inventory for expired pharmaceuticals.
- Support the facility with reporting and paperwork to ensure productivity and pharmaceutical integrity by entering and modifying pharmaceutical data in systems and on forms, processing and submitting paperwork, and creating and maintaining documentation such as files, manuals, forms, records, and supplies.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies in records or files, prepare reports of pharmacy activities and inventory including state board mandated testing of counting devices, and inform leadership about incorrect or inefficient processes and improper service procedures.
- Ensure accurate and timely fulfillment of prescriptions in an automated central fill pharmacy to maintain continuous workflow and meet daily production and quality goals by using scanners to identify and select the correct pharmaceutical product and quantity for each order.
- Verify product size and strength before processing orders, confirm display settings for packaging and quantity, enter expiration dates and lot numbers, label prescriptions, weigh medications to confirm quantity, and count or pour medications for prescription orders.
- Prepare packages and distribute medications in a fast-paced production environment, replenishing automated counting machines as needed to sustain production throughput.
- Maintain quality, accuracy, and integrity of pharmaceutical and supply inventory by using automated inventory control scanners and systems to track delivery and stocking, and ensure adherence to documented inventory control procedures.
- Audit and test pill cell performance according to prescribed schedules and procedures, manage pill cell information databases, and troubleshoot performance issues to maintain reliable automated dispensing.
- Identify and properly discard hazardous waste, process recalled and expired pharmaceuticals, and dispose of or process the return of outdated stock for credit in accordance with regulatory and facility guidelines.
Essential Skills
- Meets state requirements to work as a Pharmacy Technician, including qualification, registration, certification, and/or licensure as required by the State Board of Pharmacy.
- Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician in Indiana.
- Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician in Minnesota.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician status in Indiana.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential.
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.
- Ability to work accurately with automated medication counting machines, inventory systems, and scanner-based technologies.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in counting, labeling, and packaging medications in a high-volume production setting.
- Capability to stand in one spot for extended periods in a production environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Pharmacy technician certificate or formal pharmacy technician training.
- Experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in a retail pharmacy setting.
- Customer service experience in a pharmacy or similar environment.
- Experience in fulfillment or warehouse operations.
- Experience in compounding or handling medications in a production or central fill environment.
- Prior experience in a central fill, pill-pak, specialty or mail order production pharmacy, or shipping department.
- Familiarity with inventory control practices, including first-in, first-out stock rotation and cycle counting.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and shipping and receiving staff.
Work Environment
This position is located in a newer, highly automated central fill pharmacy facility that prepares and packages prescriptions for retail pharmacies to dispense to patients. The environment is fast paced and production-focused, requiring a high level of attention to detail and comfort working with automation and inventory technologies such as automated counting machines, scanners, and inventory systems. The facility operates as a closed-door pharmacy, with no direct customer service responsibilities and no vaccine administration or point-of-care testing. The role is on a 3rd shift schedule, working Sunday through Wednesday from 8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Team members typically stand in one spot for extended periods while performing repetitive, detail-oriented tasks. Approximately 200 staff members, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, shipping and receiving coordinators, and leadership, work onsite. The facility is closed on Thanksgiving.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plainfield, IN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
