Job Title: Site Safety Manager Civil Construction Job Description
This position oversees safety for civil construction operations and plays a key role in reinforcing a strong, proactive safety culture across active project sites. The Site Safety Manager partners closely with field leadership to ensure OSHA compliance, implement effective safety programs, and support crews with practical, hands-on safety guidance. Bilingual capability in English and Spanish is highly valued to better support diverse field teams.
Responsibilities
- Partner with field leadership to promote and maintain a proactive safety culture across all civil construction projects.
- Develop, implement, and monitor jobsite safety programs that align with OSHA standards and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and verify compliance.
- Ensure all operations comply with applicable OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Lead and facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and other safety communications with field teams.
- Provide safety training and coaching to employees and subcontractors, reinforcing safe work practices and procedures.
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions, and support root-cause analysis and corrective action plans.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation, records, and reports related to inspections, training, and compliance.
- Collaborate with project teams to integrate safety planning into daily operations and project schedules.
- Support bilingual communication of safety expectations, training, and documentation for English- and Spanish-speaking team members, as applicable.
Essential Skills
- OSHA 30 certification (required).
- Minimum 35 years of direct construction safety experience, preferably within civil or heavy construction.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards and jobsite safety best practices.
- Experience in safety management within active construction environments.
- Hands-on experience implementing and overseeing health and safety procedures on job sites.
- Ability to conduct safety inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage field leadership and crews.
- Ability to provide safety training and coaching to diverse teams.
- Commitment to fostering a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement in safety performance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is highly valued.
- OSHA 500 or OSHA 510 certification is preferred.
- Experience supporting safety on civil or heavy construction projects.
- Ability to work collaboratively with field leadership and project teams.
- Strong organizational skills to manage safety documentation and reporting.
- Motivation to contribute to a large, established contractor in the Richmond area.
Work Environment
The role involves working both onsite at active civil construction projects and in an office environment. The Site Safety Manager regularly visits job sites to observe field operations, conduct inspections, and engage directly with crews and supervisors. The position operates within a contractor setting that emphasizes safety, compliance, and collaboration, offering the opportunity to support a large portfolio of projects while working closely with field and office-based teams.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockville, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
