Job Title: Assistant Project Manager Job Description The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of complex construction projects by coordinating schedules, documentation, financials, and field operations. This role works closely with Project Executives, Superintendents, and Project Engineers to ensure projects meet quality, safety, budget, and schedule goals. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to long-term, high-visibility infrastructure initiatives while growing into increased responsibility within a supportive, family-oriented construction firm. Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Project Executive and Superintendent to develop, maintain, and monitor the master project schedule and staffing plans.
- Assist in tracking and updating the Project Success Plan to ensure alignment with project goals, milestones, and performance metrics.
- Oversee and organize all project documentation, including contracts, insurance, submittals, RFIs, schedules, change orders, meeting minutes, and subcontractor coordination records.
- Manage project financials by overseeing billing, monitoring cash flow, tracking profitability, preparing financial reports and projections, and coordinating final close-out payments.
- Prepare and present clear, accurate monthly Job Status Reports to project leadership and stakeholders.
- Supervise Project Engineers and Superintendents, ensuring they understand and fulfill their responsibilities and project requirements.
- Conduct employee performance reviews as needed, providing constructive feedback and supporting professional development.
- Foster a positive work environment by communicating clearly and respectfully, modeling professional behavior, and leading by example.
- Develop and implement project-specific quality control programs to ensure work meets or exceeds contract standards and specifications.
- Promote jobsite safety by conducting safety audits, monitoring compliance, and reinforcing safe work practices across the project team.
- Ensure subcontractors comply with company safety policies and applicable federal safety protocols.
- Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with owners, vendors, and subcontractors through reliable communication and collaborative problem-solving.
- Partner with the Preconstruction Department to evaluate and pursue new project opportunities, providing project management insights and support.
- Coordinate with field teams on construction scheduling, MEP systems integration, and subcontractor activities to maintain efficient project execution.
- Support the management of change orders, ensuring accurate documentation, pricing, and schedule impact analysis.
- Utilize construction management software and tools to track project progress, documentation, and communication.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of construction project management experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing construction submittals from preparation through review and approval.
- Proficiency in Procore for construction project management and documentation.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam for document review, markups, and coordination.
- Experience using P6 (Primavera) or similar tools for construction scheduling.
- Proficiency with Viewpoint for construction financials and project controls.
- Experience with e-Builder or similar project management platforms.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for tracking and reporting, and SharePoint for document management and collaboration.
- Hands-on experience with construction project management in federal or comparable highly regulated environments.
- Experience working with MEP systems in a construction context.
- Experience with construction scheduling and coordination of multiple trades and subcontractors.
- Ability to manage project financials, including billing, cash flow, profitability, and projections.
- Strong organizational skills to manage contracts, RFIs, change orders, and other project documentation.
- Effective leadership and supervisory skills to support and guide Project Engineers and Superintendents.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting, coordination, and stakeholder engagement.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in federal construction projects and familiarity with related compliance requirements.
- Background in working with general contractors on complex projects such as transportation, government, healthcare, institutional, hospitality, or education.
- Experience with QC programs and construction quality control processes.
- Familiarity with timberline and other construction management or accounting systems.
- Experience with glazing, carpentry, and subcontractor management in a general contractor environment.
- Experience in residential construction or similar programs is beneficial.
- Ability to build long-term relationships with owners, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Experience supporting preconstruction efforts, including pursuit of new project opportunities.
- Comfort working on large, long-term infrastructure programs and multi-year initiatives.
Work Environment The Assistant Project Manager works primarily from a field office located near a major airport, with flexibility to work from the main office at times. Once the project is underway, the role requires being on site five days per week, supporting underground tunnel projects and related infrastructure work. The environment involves active construction sites, coordination with field staff and subcontractors, and frequent use of construction management technologies such as Procore, Bluebeam, P6, Viewpoint, e-Builder, and Microsoft Office tools. The company operates as a small, second-generation family business with a non-corporate feel, emphasizing long-term relationships, collaboration, and a supportive culture. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $64.90/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
