Floating Phlebotomist

Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting efficient laboratory workflows in a fast-paced patient service environment. You will collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate documentation, and provide clear, courteous explanations of procedures to patients across pediatric through geriatric populations. The position also involves troubleshooting collection issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements to support safe, efficient, and compliant operations. Responsibilities

- Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Demonstrate and use proper phlebotomy techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure correct patient and test identification.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper handling and integrity of all samples.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Prepare and package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols for transport and storage to preserve specimen quality.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and perform related data entry tasks.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay current with procedural and compliance updates.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper techniques and sharing best practices with colleagues as needed.
- Run stat specimens from assigned patient service centers to designated hospital locations as required.

Essential Skills

- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED completion.
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
- Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Hands-on phlebotomy experience, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with blood draws, specimen labeling, sample preparation, and sample storage.
- Ability to manage patient specimens accurately, including proper identification, handling, and documentation.
- Familiarity with laboratory operations, including use of centrifuges and basic specimen processing.
- Strong data entry skills and attention to detail for accurate patient and specimen information entry.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and patient care standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Phlebotomy certification is not required, but related training or coursework is beneficial.
- Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, or biobank settings is advantageous.
- Experience in medical assisting or related clinical support roles is a plus.
- Experience handling a wide range of biological samples and patient specimens.
- Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic health record or laboratory information systems.
- Comfort working with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, including those who may be anxious about blood draws.
- Strong communication and customer service skills to interact professionally with patients and healthcare staff.
- Ability to follow detailed protocols and regulatory requirements consistently.

Work Environment Phlebotomists work in patient service centers and related clinical settings, providing specimen collection services throughout the day. Candidates are assigned to a specific patient service center location and may run stat specimens to a nearby hospital as needed. Hours vary by location within a general range of 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with typical shifts such as 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., or 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., usually structured as 8-hour workdays. The role involves working with standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and handling biological specimens under established safety and regulatory guidelines. Travel between patient service centers and hospital locations may be required for stat specimen transport, and mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. The environment is fast-paced, patient-focused, and detail-oriented, with an emphasis on safety, accuracy, and professional conduct.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
