Metallurgical Engineer

Job Title: Senior Metallurgical Engineer Job Description We are seeking an experienced Senior Metallurgical Engineer to lead asset integrity, reliability, and materials engineering initiatives across LNG facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, and other oil and gas operations. In this role, you serve as a technical subject matter expert for material selection, corrosion mitigation, failure analysis, and fitness-for-service evaluations, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of fixed equipment, piping systems, and plant infrastructure. Responsibilities

- Provide subject matter expertise in metallurgical and materials engineering for LNG, refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, and oil and gas facilities.
- Lead material selection activities for fixed equipment, piping systems, and plant infrastructure to ensure long-term integrity and reliability.
- Develop and implement corrosion mitigation strategies, including identification of corrosion mechanisms and appropriate control methods.
- Conduct detailed failure analyses of equipment and materials, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Perform fitness-for-service evaluations on fixed equipment and piping to support safe continued operation or repair and replacement decisions.
- Support fixed equipment integrity programs, including inspection planning, condition assessment, and documentation of findings.
- Provide technical support during turnarounds, outages, and maintenance activities to ensure proper handling of metallurgical and materials issues.
- Interpret and apply relevant industry codes and standards such as API, ASTM, and AMPP/NACE to engineering assessments and recommendations.
- Collaborate with quality assurance teams to verify that materials, fabrication, and welding practices meet specified requirements.
- Advise operations, maintenance, and project teams on materials engineering considerations for modifications, upgrades, and new installations.
- Prepare clear technical reports, engineering assessments, and recommendations for internal stakeholders and project teams.
- Participate in risk assessments related to asset integrity and contribute to the development of reliability improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills

- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience supporting LNG, refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, or oil and gas facilities.
- Strong knowledge of metallurgy and materials science, including materials selection for harsh operating environments.
- Expertise in corrosion mechanisms and corrosion mitigation strategies for fixed equipment and piping systems.
- Demonstrated experience in failure analysis of materials and equipment, including root cause determination.
- Strong understanding of welding metallurgy and its impact on equipment integrity and performance.
- Working knowledge of API standards relevant to fixed equipment and piping integrity.
- Working knowledge of ASTM standards related to materials properties, testing, and qualification.
- Working knowledge of AMPP/NACE standards and practices for corrosion control and materials performance.
- Experience supporting fixed equipment integrity programs in industrial facilities.
- Ability to provide high-level technical guidance as a subject matter expert in metallurgical engineering.
- Strong quality assurance mindset with the ability to verify compliance with materials and fabrication requirements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred.
- AMPP/NACE certifications are highly preferred.
- API certifications related to inspection or fitness-for-service are highly preferred.
- Experience supporting turnaround and outage activities in refining, petrochemical, LNG, or other process facilities.
- Broad exposure to metallurgy in oil, gas, and refinery environments.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including operations, maintenance, inspection, and projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports and presenting recommendations.

Work Environment This role supports LNG facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, and other oil and gas operations with a focus on fixed equipment and piping systems. You work in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based analytical work with periodic visits to industrial sites to support inspections, integrity assessments, and turnaround activities. The position involves regular use of engineering standards such as API, ASTM, and AMPP/NACE, and close collaboration with operations, maintenance, inspection, and quality assurance teams to ensure safe and reliable plant performance.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100.00 - $110.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
