Job Title: Interior Designer Job Description
This Interior Designer role supports a busy and growing interiors studio specializing in corporate workplace environments, government facilities, and commercial office interiors. You will work as part of a collaborative team across all phases of interior design projects, from programming and space planning through construction documentation and construction administration. While the primary focus is corporate interiors, you may also contribute to broader architectural projects, gaining exposure to data centers, industrial facilities, tenant interiors, and capital improvement projects such as lobby and amenity upgrades.
Responsibilities
- Assist with site surveys, field measurements, and documentation of existing conditions for interior projects.
- Develop and update Revit and Vectorworks models, including floor plans, space plans, interior elevations, and detailed construction documents.
- Produce and maintain complete drawing sets, incorporating redline markups and coordinating revisions with the project team.
- Support programming activities, including test fits, space planning, and workplace design solutions for corporate, government, and commercial office interiors.
- Contribute to finish selections, furniture layouts, material research, and the development of specifications for interior projects.
- Create presentation materials such as renderings, colored plans, and client-facing design graphics using visualization and design software.
- Coordinate with architects, MEP consultants, vendors, and manufacturers throughout the design and documentation process.
- Assist with construction administration by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and supporting ongoing project documentation.
- Maintain and organize Revit families, Vectorworks resources, detail libraries, finish resources, and internal design standards.
- Participate in client meetings, consultant coordination sessions, and project presentations, building confidence in client-facing communication.
- Collaborate closely with partners and senior team members to learn technical detailing, building systems, and best practices for putting buildings together.
- Support a variety of project types, including data centers, industrial projects, tenant interiors, and capital improvements to exteriors, lobbies, and amenities.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, or a closely related field.
- 15 years of professional experience in corporate, workplace, commercial office, or government interiors.
- Proficiency in Revit and the ability to produce accurate construction documents and drawing sets.
- Experience working within a collaborative project team on interior design or architectural projects.
- Understanding of space planning principles, workplace strategies, furniture systems, and interior detailing.
- Basic understanding of building codes and ADA requirements as they relate to interior environments.
- Familiarity with construction administration processes, including submittal review and RFIs.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with clients and present design concepts.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced design environment and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- 25 years of experience in architecture or interior design, with exposure to commercial or corporate interiors.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- BS in Architecture or Interior Design preferred.
- Experience with corporate interiors and commercial interiors, including office space, multifamily, hospitality, and mixed-use projects.
- Hands-on experience producing CD sets, construction drawings, and detailed documentation.
- Proficiency or familiarity with Vectorworks, particularly in a macOS environment, with the ability to import and export Revit and AutoCAD files.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Enscape, Lumion, SketchUp, or other visualization and rendering software.
- Skills in schematic design, design development, conceptual design, drafting, detailing, and space planning.
- Experience in construction administration and coordination with consultants and vendors.
- Client-facing personality with the confidence to present in front of clients and participate in meetings.
- Interest in technical work and in learning how to put buildings together from concept through construction.
Work Environment
The role is based within a small to midsize design firm in Northern Virginia, with a studio located in the Reston area. The firm offers a flexible hybrid work arrangement and may consider team members who work in the office 12 days per week, provided performance expectations are met. You will join a team of technical architects and interior designers in a collaborative environment where you can grow into running your own projects while learning closely from experienced partners. The firm is deeply involved in data center work, industrial projects, tenant interiors, and capital improvements, providing a steady pipeline of technically engaging projects. The primary design platform is Vectorworks on macOS, and each employee receives a MacBook Pro and iPad to work seamlessly across devices. Vectorworks supports importing and exporting Revit and AutoCAD files, and the macOS ecosystem is designed to offer stable hardware performance with fewer crashes and data issues. The studio culture is inviting and team-oriented, with a focus on mentorship, open conversation around design tools and processes, and an emphasis on technical excellence. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
