Job Title: Construction Support Technologist Job Description
We are seeking an experienced utility construction professional to provide construction support for electric utility distribution projects. This individual will serve as the critical link between engineering design teams and field construction crews, ensuring projects are constructed according to design intent while identifying and resolving field issues throughout the construction process.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the liaison between distribution design team and construction contractors during project execution.
- Review construction activities to ensure compliance with approved engineering plans and specifications.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings, construction progress meetings, and field reviews.
- Identify field issues, constructability concerns, and design conflicts and coordinate solutions with engineering teams.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, construction crews, utility personnel, and project stakeholders.
- Review and interpret utility construction drawings, design packages, specifications, and material requirements.
- Conduct field visits to document project progress through notes, sketches, and photographs.
- Support staking activities and field validation efforts.
- Assist with constructability reviews during project planning and design phases.
- Evaluate proposed field modifications and coordinate with engineering teams regarding design revisions when appropriate.
- Help ensure contractors adhere to approved plans, standards, safety requirements, and project specifications.
- Support projects involving overhead and underground electric distribution facilities.
- Provide technical guidance regarding utility equipment installation, construction methods, and field conditions.
- Assist with right-of-way, permitting, and construction coordination activities as needed.
- Work on a storm response local or travel team as a Driver and Assessor Learner.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of utility industry experience involving electric distribution design, construction, operations, or construction management.
- Strong understanding of electric utility construction practices, including overhead and underground distribution systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, utility drawings, specifications, and design packages.
- Experience working directly with field construction crews and contractors.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to identify field issues and work collaboratively with engineers to develop practical solutions.
- Knowledge of utility materials, equipment, and installation methods.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the service territory.
- Familiarity with utility permitting and right-of-way processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field is a plus.
- Utility software experience such as GIS, CYME, ArcGIS, Bluebeam, or similar tools.
- Previous experience supporting Duke Energy, investor-owned utilities, municipalities, or utility contractors.
Work Environment
The work environment for this position is primarily outdoors at active construction sites, with occasional office work to complete reports and administrative tasks. The noise level is moderate to loud at construction sites due to machinery, vehicles, and other on-site activities. The office environment is generally quiet to moderate when completing paperwork or data entry tasks. The employee will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. The role involves frequent visits to active construction sites, which may include exposure to dust, debris, and hazardous conditions. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, and steel-toed boots is mandatory on site.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tampa, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
