Job Title: Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Job Description
This role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining automated test solutions that support cutting-edge automotive infotainment and connectivity technologies. As an SDET, you will build Python-based test scripts and tools, analyze automated test results, identify root causes of issues, and validate fixes. You will contribute to a fully automated pipeline that supports hundreds of developers and enables a large fleet of automation nodes to serve cross-functional development teams around the clock.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test scripts and tools in Python to verify new feature functionality.
- Execute automated tests, analyze results, identify root causes of failures, and validate fixes to ensure high-quality software delivery.
- Monitor messaging platforms and provide timely support for development and other test teams to keep automation and communication flowing smoothly.
- Ensure regular lab equipment maintenance, including expansion and optimization, to maintain reliable and efficient operational performance.
- Support existing automation solutions with bug fixes, enhancements, and updates as needed.
- Participate in code reviews to contribute to code quality, maintainability, and adherence to best practices.
- Interface closely with development and test teams to understand technical requirements, testing needs, and system behavior.
- Comprehend and interpret technical requirements and questions, and respond directly and appropriately with well-reasoned solutions.
- Debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively, using strong knowledge of classes and object-oriented programming concepts.
- Write clean, well-structured, and well-documented code that follows sound coding practices and supports long-term maintainability.
- Work within automated testing environments and frameworks such as PyTest, unit testing frameworks, and Slash to build robust test suites.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a fully automated pipeline that empowers hundreds of developers daily and supports a large fleet of automation nodes.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
- Professional experience with object-oriented analysis and design, including multi-threading, algorithms, and data structures (co-op or academic project experience accepted).
- At least 1 year of professional experience in Python development (co-op or academic project experience accepted).
- Experience working with automated testing environments and frameworks, such as PyTest, unit testing frameworks, or Slash.
- Experience with Groovy and Java development.
- Strong understanding of classes and object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts.
- Proven ability to debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively.
- Ability to fully understand technical questions and testing requirements and respond directly and appropriately.
- Ability to write clean, well-structured, and well-documented code following sound coding practices.
- General operating system knowledge, including Windows and Linux.
- Comfort working with object-oriented design and development concepts, including algorithms and data structures.
- Ability to work effectively with test automation, software development, and related tooling in a collaborative environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins or similar continuous integration/continuous deployment tools.
- Experience with batch and shell scripting, including Windows and Linux command line scripting.
- Experience with embedded operating systems such as Linux or QNX and familiarity with microcontrollers (for example, Arduino).
- Experience with automated GUI testing solutions such as Squish or Selenium.
- Experience working with or supporting embedded OS environments and microcontroller-based systems.
- Ability to articulate how to improve code efficiency and performance, and to propose optimizations.
- Exposure to automotive infotainment and connectivity technologies is an asset.
- Experience gained through internships, co-op placements, or academic projects is welcome for junior-level candidates.
Work Environment
This role is based on-site daily at an R&D center in Waterloo, working within a test automation and tools development team. The environment is highly technical and collaborative, focused on delivering the latest automotive infotainment and connectivity technologies. You will work with a large fleet of automation nodes, automated testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and a mix of Windows, Linux, and embedded operating systems. The setting is a modern research and development facility that supports hands-on work with lab equipment, microcontrollers, and automation infrastructure, providing an engaging atmosphere for continuous learning and innovation.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Waterloo, ON.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $38.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
