About this role

Job Title: Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer Job Description This role offers an opportunity for a Senior or strong intermediate Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to lead and support the development of a new nuclear reactor design. You will work across conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases for nuclear and conventional systems, with a strong focus on system-level design and safety systems. The position combines hands-on technical design, expert design verification, and mentoring 12 junior engineers while collaborating closely with large, multidisciplinary project teams on major nuclear projects. Responsibilities

- Support preliminary and conceptual design phases for system upgrades and improvements to proven nuclear plant system designs.
- Lead and contribute to the development of a new nuclear reactor design from conceptual design through preliminary and detailed design phases.
- Participate in the preparation of design plans, methodologies, and strategies for instrumentation and controls systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including CSA, CNSC, IAEA, IEC, IEEE, and relevant client design standards and guides.
- Perform design reviews and design verification of technical documents prepared by others to ensure accuracy and adherence to requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and apply sound engineering principles to resolve complex technical issues.
- Ensure the quality, consistency, accuracy, and completeness of all engineering deliverables.
- Deliver technical engineering tasks and deliverables within specified timelines and budgets.
- Develop and design preliminary and detailed engineering I&C packages for nuclear and conventional systems.
- Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of I&C engineering deliverables, including instrument indexes, installation details, location drawings, function block logic diagrams, control and monitoring functional descriptions, datasheets, calibration sheets, P&IDs, material requisitions, and bills of materials.
- Perform or oversee calculations for control valves, flow elements, and pressure safety valves.
- Lead or participate in the evaluation of alternatives and selection of instrumentation and control equipment.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives and interface with multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure integrated system designs.
- Prepare or review engineering quotation requests and tender technical evaluations in accordance with quality programs and operating procedures.
- Review vendor designs for compliance with technical specification requirements, industry standards, and guidelines, and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) as required.
- Provide on-site implementation support for instrumentation installations and participate in Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Conduct field walkdowns at client sites and prepare detailed walkdown reports.
- Support the Discipline Lead Engineer with timely updates on engineering progress, performance, schedule, and budget.
- Prepare engineering deliverables in accordance with nuclear quality assurance programs and project requirements.
- Effectively manage assigned work, including prioritizing tasks, executing work scopes, managing schedules and budgets, and reporting status to meet project goals.
- Attend site visits and technical meetings as required to support design, review, and implementation activities.
- Mentor and support 12 junior engineers, providing training and guidance on complex systems and design practices.
- Focus on expert design verification and design reviews, particularly for safety systems and complex system-level designs.
- Develop system-level requirements and Control Function Specification designs to guide programmers and controls engineers in implementation.
- Support all major projects by contributing specialized knowledge in nuclear safety systems and system-level instrumentation and control design.
- Promote and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment.

Essential Skills

- Proven experience as an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer with a strong focus on instrumentation and process automation.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent professional engineering registration.
- Design experience in the nuclear industry, preferably with reactor systems.
- Experience working on nuclear safety systems such as SDS-1 and SDS-2, with emphasis on system-level design rather than only individual instruments.
- Demonstrated experience in process automation from an I&C perspective, particularly with instrumentation such as thermocouples, RTDs, actuators, and control valves.
- Strong knowledge of advanced control strategies including cascade control and feedforward control.
- Hands-on experience with flow measurement, level measurement, cable block diagrams, and bubbler systems.
- Design experience producing datasheets, control narratives, logic diagrams, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and I/O or instrument indexes.
- Experience preparing conceptual documentation and assessments to support new system designs, particularly in large, complex projects.
- Familiarity with conceptual and preliminary design phases for large-scale engineering projects.
- Strong system design skills, including development of core functional requirements and Control Function Specification designs for implementation by programmers.
- Experience with automation, instrumentation controls, and controls engineering, including SCADA and I&C systems.
- Proficiency in preparing and reviewing loop diagrams and wiring diagrams for instrumentation and control systems.
- Ability to perform and review HAZOP-related activities or support hazard and operability considerations in design.
- Experience preparing engineering deliverables for both nuclear and conventional systems under nuclear quality assurance programs.
- Ability to manage engineering work scopes, including scheduling, budgeting, and reporting, within a project environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide clear technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Team-oriented mindset with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary, cross-functional project teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience in nuclear plant design for Nuclear Island or Balance of Plant (BOP), with Nuclear Steam Plant experience preferred.
- Background in nuclear projects involving major utilities or operators such as Bruce Power or OPG.
- Prior experience supporting safety systems and system-level design in other highly regulated industries such as oil and gas or mining is considered an asset.
- Experience focusing on complete system design rather than solely on individual instrumentation equipment.
- Familiarity with SmartPlant for modeling and data-centric design of instrumentation and control systems.
- Experience using Plant 3D or similar 3D modeling tools for plant and system layout is required.
- Existing nuclear clearance is highly desirable to enable rapid onboarding to nuclear facilities and projects.
- Experience participating in or supporting HAZOP studies and other formal safety and risk assessments.
- Exposure to or collaboration with major engineering and consulting firms in the nuclear sector is an asset.
- Strong capability in expert design reviews and design verification, particularly for complex nuclear systems.
- Demonstrated experience training and mentoring junior or intermediate engineers on complex systems and nuclear design practices.
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable codes and standards such as CSA, CNSC, IAEA, IEC, and IEEE.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, programming concepts, and the creation of requirements for software implementation teams.
- Experience participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for instrumentation and control systems.
