Job Title: Mechanical Project Engineer Job Description This role is an urgent, highpriority opportunity for an experienced mechanical project engineer to lead a large ESCO construction project for a school district in Utah. You will own daytoday project delivery from active execution through upcoming phases, ensuring work is completed on schedule, within budget, and aligned with client expectations. The position focuses on mechanical renovation and retrofit work, including sheet metal, plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping scopes, and plays a critical role in both current project phases and future expansion. Responsibilities
- Manage largescale mechanical construction projects from active execution through future phases, ensuring continuity and smooth handoffs.
- Drive projects to meet schedule and budget targets, maintaining close oversight of cost tracking, forecasting, and financial performance.
- Oversee daily project operations, including coordination of field activities and resolution of issues that affect project delivery.
- Manage trades and subcontractors, including sheet metal, plumbing, HVAC, and piping partners, to ensure quality, safety, and productivity.
- Coordinate closely with onsite superintendents, leveraging their technical expertise while providing strong project leadership.
- Serve as a key point of contact for the client, maintaining clear communication, managing expectations, and addressing concerns promptly.
- Review, manage, and maintain detailed project budgets and cost breakdowns, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Partner with internal teams responsible for project accounting and reporting to ensure accurate billing, financial reporting, and documentation.
- Support and oversee projects involving sheet metal, plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping scopes, particularly in renovation and retrofit environments.
- Lead and respond effectively to critical and immediate project needs, stepping in quickly to stabilize schedules and resolve issues.
- Develop, maintain, and update project schedules, including sequencing of work, resource planning, and milestone tracking.
- Manage construction management processes such as RFIs, submittals, change orders, and related documentation to maintain project control.
- Collaborate on estimating and design considerations for mechanical engineering and retrofit projects, especially within designbuild contract structures.
- Use project management and construction accounting tools to track progress, manage costs, and support financial reporting.
- Ensure all work complies with project specifications, design requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
Essential Skills
- 510 years of experience managing mechanical renovation or retrofit projects, particularly in construction environments.
- Proven experience as a project manager on construction projects with a value of $10M or more.
- Experience supporting or leading projects in the $30M+ range is strongly preferred.
- Strong background in managing projects to both schedule and budget, with a track record of delivering on time and within financial targets.
- Demonstrated ability to build project schedules and manage, track, and understand detailed project budgets and cost breakdowns.
- Handson experience coordinating subcontractors, trades, and client relationships in a mechanical construction setting.
- Familiarity with mechanical construction environments, including sheet metal, plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping scopes.
- Experience with project management, construction management, and scheduling tools and processes.
- Ability to manage change orders, RFIs, submittals, billing, and financial reporting for construction projects.
- Capability to provide leadership in fastpaced, highpriority project situations and respond quickly to critical needs.
- Comfort working closely with onsite superintendents, relying on their technical execution while maintaining overall project control.
- Strong communication and organizational skills to manage multiple stakeholders and project phases effectively.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with industrial piping, mechanical construction, and large industrial projects is preferred.
- Involvement and experience with designbuild contracts and associated project delivery methods.
- background in mechanical engineering, engineering design, or construction engineering is beneficial.
- Experience with retrofit projects, particularly in occupied or operational facilities such as school districts.
- Familiarity with Vista by Viewpoint or similar construction accounting and project management software is helpful but not required.
- Experience with estimating for mechanical scopes, including HVAC, sheet metal, and piping.
- Knowledge of ESCO (Energy Service Company) project structures and performancebased contracts is advantageous.
Work Environment This is an onsite role at the project location in Utah, supporting a large industrial ESCO project for a school district. The schedule typically consists of six 12hour shifts per week (6×12s), offering overtime opportunities with enhanced pay rates for hours worked over 50 per week. You will work closely with onsite superintendents, trades, and subcontractors in an active mechanical construction environment that includes sheet metal, plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping work. The setting is fastpaced and focused on meeting critical project deadlines, with a strong emphasis on safety, collaboration, and clear communication. Standard constructionappropriate attire and personal protective equipment are expected in the field. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
