Job Title: Payroll Team Lead Job Description
The Payroll Team Lead oversees end-to-end payroll processing for a large, multi-provincial employee population and leads a small payroll team to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant pay cycles. This role combines hands-on payroll processing with team leadership, acting as the primary escalation point for complex payroll issues and collaborating closely with HR and Finance to support reporting, audits, and continuous process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and support the payroll team on a day-to-day basis, including assigning work, setting priorities, and monitoring performance.
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for 300+ employees, ensuring every pay cycle is completed accurately and on time.
- Manage multi-provincial payroll, with a specific focus on British Columbia and Alberta payroll requirements.
- Review and approve payroll prior to finalization, including verification of earnings, deductions, benefits, and taxes.
- Act as the primary escalation point for complex payroll issues, discrepancies, and employee inquiries, ensuring timely resolution.
- Oversee payroll reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and ensure they are resolved promptly and accurately.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee payroll records in accordance with internal policies and legislative requirements.
- Ensure payroll practices remain compliant with provincial legislation and internal policies, and stay current on legislative and regulatory changes.
- Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements that enhance payroll efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
- Train new team members on payroll processes, systems, and policies, and act as a subject matter expert for the payroll function.
- Collaborate with HR and Finance on payroll-related initiatives, reporting, audits, and special projects.
- Support year-end payroll activities, such as preparation and review of T4s and other statutory reporting, as needed.
Essential Skills
- 48 years of payroll experience with a focus on high-volume environments.
- 12 years of payroll lead experience, including leading or mentoring a team of approximately 25 employees.
- Proven experience processing payroll for 300+ employees.
- Hands-on experience with British Columbia and Alberta payroll processing.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation and compliance requirements across multiple provinces.
- Demonstrated ability to review and approve payroll, including earnings, deductions, benefits, and taxes.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to act as an escalation point and resolve complex payroll issues and discrepancies.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple pay cycles and priorities.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members, HR, Finance, and employees.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using Vista payroll or HRIS software.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation or active progress toward certification.
- Experience supporting year-end payroll activities, including preparation and review of T4s.
- Experience implementing or contributing to process improvements within payroll operations.
- Comfort working in a leadership role with responsibility for coaching and developing team members.
Work Environment
This is an on-site position within a professional office environment, reporting into the accounting function. The role involves regular collaboration with HR and Finance teams and frequent interaction with employees regarding payroll inquiries. Work is deadline-driven, particularly around payroll cut-offs and year-end activities, and requires consistent attention to detail and accuracy. The environment supports a permanent, stable position with opportunities to lead a small team and contribute to continuous improvement of payroll processes.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $36.05 - $40.86/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
