Job Title: Quality Engineer Job Description
This Quality Engineer role focuses on implementing and maintaining robust quality systems and controls within a high-volume manufacturing environment. You will combine technical expertise in quality management with continuous improvement methodologies and customer relationship management to drive quality excellence across production operations. In this position, you will serve as a key liaison between internal manufacturing teams and external customers on all quality-related matters, ensuring products meet or exceed customer and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop, update, and maintain quality procedures, work instructions, and documentation to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct internal audits of the quality management system and oversee corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes to address nonconformances.
- Lead quality system improvements to ensure continuous compliance with customer specifications and industry standards.
- Establish and maintain statistical process control (SPC) systems for critical manufacturing processes to monitor and improve performance.
- Design and implement inspection plans, test procedures, and quality checkpoints throughout the production line to ensure consistent product quality.
- Investigate and resolve quality issues by performing root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Collaborate closely with production teams to achieve first-time quality, reduce defect rates, and improve overall process capability.
- Lead and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives using methodologies such as IWS, Lean, Six Sigma, or similar frameworks.
- Identify opportunities for process optimization and waste reduction within manufacturing operations and drive corresponding improvement projects.
- Develop and implement improvement projects that enhance product quality, reduce costs, and improve operational efficiency.
- Train and mentor production staff on quality tools, problem-solving techniques, and best practices in quality management.
- Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality performance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with customer quality teams to support ongoing business and quality objectives.
- Respond to customer corrective action requests and quality notifications in a timely and thorough manner.
- Prepare and present quality performance data, trend analyses, and improvement plans to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) activities by ensuring customer quality requirements are understood, documented, and integrated into manufacturing processes.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, or a related technical field.
- 35 years of experience in quality engineering within a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with quality management systems such as ISO 9001, AS9100, TS16949, or similar standards.
- Demonstrated experience with quality engineering practices, including root cause analysis and internal auditing.
- Strong knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and core quality tools such as FMEA, control plans, and measurement system analysis (MSA).
- Proficiency with quality management software and databases for tracking nonconformances, CAPA, and quality metrics.
- Experience with measurement systems and calibration programs to ensure accuracy and reliability of inspection equipment.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and production systems in a high-volume environment.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and drive evidence-based decisions.
- Strong project management capabilities, including planning, prioritizing, and executing multiple initiatives concurrently.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills for engaging with cross-functional teams and customer stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, and supply chain.
- Customer-focused mindset with strong relationship-building skills and a commitment to meeting customer expectations.
- Detail-oriented approach with strong organizational abilities to manage documentation, audits, and improvement activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma Green Belt, or Six Sigma Black Belt.
- Experience serving as a lead auditor or leading quality-related initiatives within a certified quality management system.
- Experience in commercial printed packaging or similar high-volume, graphics-intensive manufacturing environments.
- Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis software such as Minitab, JMP, or comparable tools.
- Experience working with ERP systems to support quality and production processes.
- Strong proficiency with Office 365, including the ability to develop and maintain SharePoint sites for quality documentation and collaboration.
- Exposure to continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or IWS, with a proven track record of driving improvements.
Work Environment
This role is based in a high-volume flexible packaging manufacturing plant that produces printed packaging materials used in food, consumer products, and other consumer goods applications. You will work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams on the manufacturing floor and in an office setting to monitor processes, implement quality controls, and support continuous improvement initiatives. The position includes occasional travel, with approximately once-a-month visits to a customer site in Winston-Salem to support customer quality reviews, address issues, and strengthen relationships. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $75000.00 - $95000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. 11 Holidays
