Job Title: Substation Construction Manager Job Description
The Substation Construction Manager oversees complex substation projects during the construction and commissioning phases, ensuring safe, high-quality, and on-schedule delivery. This role focuses on managing subcontractor performance, coordinating field activities, and meeting rigorous reporting and computer-based documentation requirements. The position supports large-scale utility and solar-related projects with a strong pipeline of work over multiple years.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage construction activities for substation projects from construction through commissioning.
- Drive subcontractor performance to ensure all work complies with safety, quality, contract, and schedule requirements.
- Lead subcontractor crews to build substations and related infrastructure, overseeing daily field operations.
- Manage overall production and quality for assigned projects and crews, ensuring work meets design and construction standards.
- Supervise and coordinate teams of up to approximately 25 people at a time, providing clear direction and guidance.
- Ensure construction subcontractors execute work in accordance with safety programs, risk management practices, and applicable standards.
- Oversee and enforce quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes for all substation construction activities.
- Manage and track project progress against construction documents, schedules, and milestones.
- Prepare, maintain, and submit accurate and timely reports using computer-based tools and systems.
- Handle robust reporting requirements, including standardized reporting to project teams and stakeholders.
- Conduct regular construction meetings with project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders to review progress, issues, and action items.
- Support and implement change management processes, including documenting changes and coordinating their execution in the field.
- Identify, communicate, and help mitigate construction risks in coordination with project management.
- Collaborate closely with project management and engineering teams to resolve field issues and maintain alignment with project objectives.
- Ensure compliance with utility and customer-specific requirements, including those related to distribution, substation, and transmission line work.
- Promote and uphold a strong safety culture on site, ensuring all crews follow established safety policies and procedures.
- Support multiple ongoing projects as needed, contributing to a backlog of work that may extend over several years.
Essential Skills
- Proven substation construction management experience, with a strong track record overseeing substation projects.
- Experience in distribution construction management.
- Knowledge of electrical distribution and power delivery systems.
- Ability to interpret and manage construction documents for substation and related projects.
- Demonstrated experience with QA/QC processes in a construction environment.
- Strong construction management skills, including planning, coordination, and field execution.
- Proficiency with computer skills, including the ability to handle detailed reporting and documentation requirements.
- Strong reporting skills, including standardized project reporting to internal teams and stakeholders.
- Experience overseeing subcontractor crews and leading teams of up to approximately 25 people.
- Ability to manage safety, quality, reporting, contract, standards, change management, risk management, and schedule requirements during construction.
- Willingness and ability to work extended hours, typically 5 days per week with 10-hour shifts and a base work week of 50+ hours.
- Availability to support multi-year projects, typically ranging from 2+ to 5 years depending on project needs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on projects for major utilities, including prior Entergy project experience.
- Background in transmission and t-line construction work in addition to substation and distribution projects.
- Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure or data center-related projects.
- Project management experience in construction environments, including coordination with multiple stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of safety practices and regulations in electrical and substation construction.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders, including leading construction meetings.
- Experience working in environments with a mix of distribution, substation, and transmission line work.
- Flexibility to support a growing portfolio of projects with a long-term backlog extending into future years.
Work Environment
This role is field-based and focuses on pushing and coordinating the work of subcontractor crews on active substation construction sites. The project associated with this position is slated to last 2+ years, with additional multi-year backlog across multiple projects. The typical schedule consists of 10-hour workdays for 5 days per week, with a base work week of 50+ hours and the expectation that hours may increase as project demands grow. Standard per diem is provided for 7 days per week, and time-and-a-half applies after the base work week. Holidays and paid time off are offered, with bill-back arrangements to the customer. The work environment centers on large-scale utility and solar-related projects, supporting a growing footprint with major utilities and a strong pipeline of awarded projects for upcoming years. The position requires consistent use of computers and reporting tools in the field to document progress, safety, quality, and schedule performance.

This is a Contract position based out of Rayville, Louisiana.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
