Job Title: Phlebotomist Float (West Region) Job Description
This float phlebotomist role provides hands-on experience in outpatient settings, performing high-volume blood draws, processing and packaging specimens, and coordinating shipments to a medical testing facility. You will travel between multiple clinics within the west region, working closely with another phlebotomist and clinic staff to ensure accurate, timely, and safe specimen collection and handling.
Responsibilities
- Perform 2530 blood draws per day using venipuncture techniques, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure.
- Collect blood specimens accurately, following established phlebotomy protocols and order of draw for multiple tube collections.
- Process specimens promptly after collection, including proper labeling, handling, and preparation according to laboratory requirements.
- Package blood samples securely to maintain specimen integrity during transport to the medical testing site in Novi/Farmington.
- Coordinate daily with clinic staff to organize and schedule blood draws across assigned outpatient locations.
- Arrange and schedule courier pick-ups or shipping of collected samples to the designated testing facility within required timeframes.
- Work in partnership with another phlebotomist to complete all daily draws efficiently and accurately at assigned locations.
- Maintain accurate documentation of specimens collected, processed, and shipped in accordance with clinic and laboratory procedures.
- Follow all safety, infection control, and quality standards related to specimen collection, processing, and packaging.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the order of draw and BD Vacutainer tube colors, and apply this knowledge consistently in daily work.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant performing blood draws, specimen processing, and packaging.
- Documented experience completing at least 200 solo blood draws.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and venipuncture techniques in an outpatient or clinical setting.
- Strong skills in specimen collection, including correct identification, labeling, and handling of blood samples.
- Experience in specimen processing, including preparation and packaging for transport to a laboratory or testing facility.
- Ability to apply and explain the correct order of draw for multiple tube collections.
- Knowledge of BD Vacutainer order of draw tube colors and their appropriate use.
- Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification or certificate.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate schedules and logistics with clinic staff across multiple locations.
- Ability to manage a consistent weekday schedule without planned time off during the initial 90 days of employment.

- Comfort working as part of a small team and collaborating closely with another phlebotomist.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in specimen labeling, processing, and packaging.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple locations, schedules, and daily draw volumes.
- Reliability and punctuality to support consistent Monday through Friday operations.
- Interest in building extensive hands-on phlebotomy experience in a float role across multiple sites.
Work Environment
This role is based in outpatient clinical settings across eight locations in the west region, with a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You will work as a float phlebotomist, traveling between assigned clinics on designated days, and will not be required to visit all locations each day. You will partner with another phlebotomist to complete daily draws and coordinate with clinic staff at each site. The team wears navy blue scrubs as standard attire. The work involves frequent patient interaction, regular use of phlebotomy equipment and BD Vacutainer systems, and adherence to clinical safety and infection control protocols in a professional healthcare environment.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
